What's So Great About Organic Food?

Question : 1 Pesticides are a source of pollution affecting land, water and FOOD. Should we be worried about getting pesticides in the food we eat? Is there a difference to Organic and Conventional Food? The answer to both of these questions is YES. A recent study shows that the cattle raised on feedlots have a higher chance of spreading E coli, a common type of bacteria that can get into food like beef, and it can make you sick. A pesticide called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a deadly pathogen associated mostly with hospital-acquired infections, and they have been turning up in hog farmers, who contract it from their animals.

Question : 2 Omega-3: There are benefits to eating organic produce, like the fact that grass fed cattle have higher ratios of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6’s. It is widely believed that a balance such as this will reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and arthritis and it can improve cognitive function. Chemical Fertilizers and hormones: Unlike omega-3, chemical fertilizers are not a benefit. Up to 10 million tons of chemical fertilizer per year are poured onto fields to cultivate corn, this has led to toxic runoffs that are poisoning the Gulf of Mexico. – Another reason why it might be a better idea to eat organic food instead of conventional food is because the beef raised in industrial conditions are dosed with antibiotics and growth-boosting hormones. These antibiotics and hormones leave chemical residues in meat and milk.

Question : 3 There are many ways that environmental contaminants can enter the human body, one of these ways is through our FOOD! – Animals that are raised on feed lots are more likely to contain chemicals or hormones that can harm us. Like the hormones used in beef to boost the growth of the cattle so farmers can butcher them faster. Produce like corn, tomatoes and other vegetables are all sprayed with pesticides, and even after washing your veggies before you eat them may not take all of the contaminant away. Pesticides can seep threw the skin of a vegetable and into the food itself. – ( A few places that grow organic food uses biopesticides, the aren’t as dangerous as synthetic pesticides, but less toxic isn’t the same as non- toxic.)

Question : 4 You can reduce exposure to contaminants that are gathered through eating conventional food, by starting to buy organic. That doesn’t mean that you have to stop buying conventional food altogether, but buying organically can help increase your health. It might cost more but the truth is it depends if you are willing to spend more in order to avoid pesticides, hormones, and chemicals. Try looking for a place that sells cheap organic food or try growing your own.

Question 5: The truth is that everyone is vulnerable to these environmental factors. Although it is said that Americans are the most vulnerable, The Organic Center, a nonprofit group in Boulder, did a study that showed that organic produce was found to be 25% higher in phenolic acids and antioxidants. Charles Benbrook says “ It’s these components that are deficient in American diets, so that makes the finding especially significant.”

Question : 6 Organic Center in Boulder: is a grassroots organization intending to do more studies to get people to see that eating organically could be better for their health. Organic Consumers Association: is a grassroots, non-profit public interest group campaigning for health, justice, and sustainability. Northland Organic Foods Corporation: is a global food and agriculture products company, they specialize in the development of organic food.

Conclusion As a conclusion I would say that you don’t have to eat organically, but you may get a better health out of it.
