1 MATHEMATICS RESOURCE CENTRE
PRESENTED BY MADHUSUDAN INDAVAR PRIMARY TEACHER, KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA, ASC CENTRE (SOUTH), VICTORIA ROAD,BANGALORE-47

2 MATHEMATICS RESOURCE CENTRE
& ITS OBJECTIVES TO INTRODUCE WORLD FAMOUS MATHEMATICIANS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS. TO CREATE INTEREST IN MATHEMATICS AMONG STUDENTS. TO EXPOSE THE STUDENTS TO SHORT INTERESTING,INSTRUCTIVE,AND THOUGHT PROVOKING ARTICLES,MATHEMATICAL JOKES & FALLACIES, PUZZLES,PROBLEMS,GAMES ETC. TO EXPOSE STUDENTS TO MORE FANTASTIC IDEAS IN MATHEMATICS.

3 MATHEMATICS RESOURCE CENTRE
My dear students, The road to Mathematics is not smooth and along the path there may be huge lions but they are all chained. Many of you may be frightened away by their roar ! Only the adventurous ones go ahead with the journey. All that is needed is interest and an undistracted head. MADHUSUDAN INDAVAR

4 DID YOU SPOT THE MATHEMATICIAN ?
NIELS HENRIK ABEL B: D: Norwegian son of a poor pastor. His works were mainly on solvability of polynomial equations of degree exceeding 4. NIELS HENRIK ABEL B: D:

5 GIFTED MATHEMATICIANS OF ALL ROUND ABILITY WITH AN IRRESISTIBLE IMPULSE TO DO MATHS
LEOPOLD KRONECKER (GERMAN) B: D: ‘Natural numbers were made by God. The rest is the work of Man’ LEOPOLD KRONECKER His works were mainly on Algebra Analysis Topology etc. LEOPOLD KRONECKER (GERMAN) B: D:

6 HE GIFTED US WITH ‘FOURIER SERIES’
‘Greatest and most modest mathematician of the 18th century’ Son of a tailor. Grew up as an orphan. JEAN BAPTISTE JOSEPH FOURIER (French) B : D :

7 LEONHARD EULER (SWISS) ‘FATHER OF MODERN MATHEMATICS’
His collected works exceed 70 volumes. Did research till the end of his life even after losing his eye sight in 1735.Euler’s formula for a Regular Polyhedron is given by F+V=E+2 where F → Number of Faces V→ Number of Vertices E→ Number of Edges His works were mainly on Functions Topology Vectors Partial Differential Equations etc. LEONHARD EULER (SWISS) B: D:

8 DID YOU SPOT THE MATHEMATICIAN ?
GLORIOUS MEN OF MATHEMATICS WHO PLAYED A PART IN THE REVOLUTION OF SCIENCE DID YOU SPOT THE MATHEMATICIAN ? HINT :His name is ‘NOT NEW’ British Mathematician and a Physicist. Born in a family of farmers. All his original works were in Algebra, Calculus, Infinity, Logic. SIR ISAAC NEWTON B: D:

9 GREAT MEN WHO HAVE CREATED MODERN MATHEMATICS
RENE DESCARTES (FRENCH) B: D: Founder of Analytical Geometry His works were mainly on Exponents Polyhedra Sets Signed number Topology Graphs etc. RENE DESCARTES (FRENCH) B: D:

10 His works were mainly on Theory of Groups etc.
A MATHEMATICIAN IS A BLIND MAN IN A DARK ROOM SEARCHING FOR A BLACK CAT WHICH IS NOT THERE ! EVARISTE GALOIS (French) B: D: His works were mainly on Theory of Groups etc. EVARISTE GALOIS (French) B: D:

11 ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST UNUSUAL OF MATHEMATICAL GENIUSES OF ALL TIMES !
INDIAN MATHEMATICAL WIZARD Son of a petty accountant in a cloth shop. His works were mainly on Theory of partitions Continued fractions Infinite integrals etc. SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN B: D:

14 MATHS CORNER Dear children,
‘What is Infinity’ ? You might have often wondered ! Almost all of you will say ‘Infinity is a very large number’. A few of you might say by defining Infinity as ‘1÷0’. Both are wrong ! Infinity is not a number. It is actually a concept or idea which can not be defined. If 1 = ∞, then 0 X ∞ = 1 which means that ∞ times zero is 1. That is …….up to ∞=1. How can ‘Nothing+ Nothing+ Nothing+ Nothing+ ……….. become “Something” ? There was a young fellow from Trinity who took √∞ but the number of digits gave him the fidgets. He dropped Math and took up Divinity.
