Organizational Design The process by which managers select and manage various dimensions and components of organizational structure and culture so that an organization can control the activities necessary to achieve its goals. Organizational Culture The set of shared values and norms that control organizational members’ interactions with each other and with people outside the organization. Organizational Theory The study of how organizations function and how they affect and are affected by the environment in which they operate. 1-8

Organizations exist to: Increase specialization and division of labor Use large-scale technology: economies of scale result when goods and services are produced in large volume economies of scope result from using underutilized resources across different products or tasks

4 4 What Is an Organization? Organizations exist to: Manage the external environment Economize on transaction costs (the costs associated with negotiating, monitoring, and governing exchanges with people) Exert power and control
