Lesson 5

 The carpentry trade covers many items. That is, it is not confined to a few specific items such a reinforcing steel, painting etc.  Common carpentry items include timber framing, linings and claddings  Some carpentry items such as timber framing can either be fabricated on site or off site (prenailed walls, trusses etc)  Carpenters apart from their own work often attend on sub trades

 Items to consider include when pricing timber framing: ◦ Size of timber 200x50, 150x50, 100x10 etc ◦ Length of stock sizes ◦ Rough sawn (R/S) or plane and gauged (P/G) ◦ Timber treatment (H1.2, H3.2 etc) ◦ Timber strength (SG6, SG8, SG10 etc) ◦ Usage (location, sub floor, walls, roofs etc) ◦ Quantity required ◦ What it is been fixed to ◦ Species of timber

 There is a range of linings that the carpenter installs. These range from wood products such as plywood through to fibre cement products such as Villaboard and Hardiflex and Seratone. Reconstituted products such as Fermacell are also installed by the carpenter  Each product is not only designed for specific uses (though sometimes more than one type can be used), but they all have different price points  Factors to consider when pricing include: ◦ The product itself ◦ Where it is being installed (wall, ceiling etc) ◦ Sheet size and thickness ◦ Method of fixing (glue, screwed, nailed) ◦ Method of finishing

 Similar parameters to Linings except that along with sheet products there are also board products notably weatherboards  Installation method is vitally important as the cladding protects the interior from the weather  Laps to be considered with weatherboards

 Finishing lines include the trim and mouldings that finish the work. These include skirting boards, cornice, architrave, scriber etc  Factors to consider when pricing include: ◦ The product itself including its profile ◦ Internal or external ◦ Where it is being installed (wall, ceiling etc) ◦ Stock length ◦ Method of fixing (glue, screwed, nailed)

 Other items that the carpenter typically install includes: ◦ Building paper and wrap ◦ Battens ◦ handrails  Carpenters may also install: ◦ Doors and windows ◦ Joinery fittings ◦ Minor concrete footings / piles ◦ Roof coverings ◦ Door and sundry hardware ◦ Plasterboard linings ◦ Vents and grilles ◦ Builders work to sub contractors

150x50 deck joist, 2500 long. How much per m to install? C 150x50 H3.2 timber (3000 stock length) = $14.65. This includes discounts. We only need a 2500 piece though. So, $14.65 / 2.50 = $5.86 /m. This is not the cost per m however. The cost /m is $14.65 / 3.0 = $ 4.89 C Cartage say $0.15 / m$ 0.15 W Waste = 0.50m / 2.50m = 0.20 or 20% $ 0.98 F Nails and fixings = $0.70 /m $ 0.70 e nil$ 0.00 L Carpenter 0.18 hr @ $45.00/hr = $ 8.10 Total cost per m of floor joist$14.82 / m
