3 Poor working conditions were normal at the turn of the 20 th century. Women: received about half of what men earned per week Children often worked long hours in dangerous conditions Examples of working conditions:  Small, crowded rooms  Specialization made workers tired, bored, and more likely to be injured.  Managers paid less attention to working conditions.  Stuffy air  Unsafe workplaces  Long hours  Low wages  No job security

9  Dissatisfied workers organized into groups known as labor unions.  Unions represent workers in bargaining with management- this is known as collective bargaining  Employers would and did fire employees for joining a union

10 Knights of Labor Founded by garment cutters Would met in secret & had a secret handshake Became one of the first national labor unions. American Federation of Labor (AFL) Represented skilled workers Led by Samuel Gompers

11 Many Unions would not accept Women, so some women formed their own Mary Jones Harris- Known as Mother Jones Spent 50 years fighting for workers rights

12 Triangle Shirt Waist Company  Large sweatshop factory  Fire broke out, many workers were trapped  Doors were locked to keep workers from leaving early  150 died mostly young women  The incident led to the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) to push for safer working environment.
