19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 1 AD and AD experimental areas: equipment tests and startup with beam Tommy Eriksson AB/OP/AD

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 2 AD and AD experimental areas: equipment tests and startup with beam 1.Planning 2.Equipment tests 3.HW status 4.News for the 2006 run 5.Beam requirements 6.ccc 7.Conclusion

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 3 2006 Run planning Short run with only 3 months of physics. AD run extended to cover weekends. 2650 hours total (2040 physics) are scheduled, to be compared with 3400 in 2004. OP/AD-LEIR section will cover either AD or LEIR operation, including LEIR commissioning. AD: ops crew = 5 specialists on-call Mon 07:00 – Mon 07:00 24h/24. Shiftwork on AD during startups and md:s.

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 4 Shutdown work/startup planning

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 5 Equipment tests Key dates: –24/4: search + closure of AD ring and Target Area AD Hall remains in free access unless major problems Target area in controlled access (special access procedure) Controlled access to AD ring if needed –24/4 – 14/5: HW tests + cold checkout –15/5: startup w. production beam –No critical days

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 6 HW status: e-cooler

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 7 HW status: e-cooler

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 8 Electron cooler/Vacuum: Replacement of / add missing NEG:s Repair of orbit pickups Replacement of cathode Alignment Improvement of orbit correctors 2904/2917: Study completed, but no budget to go further

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 9 Electron cooler/Vacuum Install non-magnetic support for VVS3105 Install vacuum chamber in place of K35 Repair of BIPM sect 42 Isolate 8000-line Modify VVS in ej. line

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 10 News for 2006 ACE (AD-4) has requested 500 MeV/c pbars for cell irradiation. Approval by SPSC in Jan. 06 ?? This implies significant changes to the AD cycle: –Tests of SW during eq.tests –Use of some of the planned md-periods during the year for further tests –Final setting-up followed by physics to be done at end of 2006 run to avoid disturbing the other users; 160 hours in total requested (setup + physics). If unexpected problems, ACE can go back to 300 MeV/c operation on short notice

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 11 News for 2006

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 12 News for 2006 Tests of ATRAP:s new 3T solenoid in 2004 revealed that no beam can be transferred to ATHENA due to the stray field A new H dipole will be installed to compensate (DE0.DHZ87) Tests during startup

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 13 Beam requirements 26 GeV/c beam needed as from 15/5 No use of 3.57 GeV/c protons is planned, BUT: –In case of serious problems, we might have to resort to proton operation with AD in reverse polarity; 3.5 GeV/c tst beam should be available on fairly short notice

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 14 Operation from ccc Start-ups and md:s will continue to be carried out from the ACR As far as tools/diagnostics, no major problems can expected for ccc operation; CCC=MCR as seen from the AD The required AD modifications for efficient operation from the ccc were: –Improve stability with improved steering dipoles for pbar/e-beam alignment –Replace MWPC:s by non-destructive BPM:s in the ejection lines None of the requested modifications were carried out – many trips to/from ACR, more downtime and delays can be expected

19 January 2006 PS&SPS DAYS AD equipment tests and startup with beam Slide 15 Conclusion Main worries for the 2006 startup: –18 months stop –Electron cooler behaviour after complete dismantling –No adaptation for ccc-operation
