“It’s Alive!” Enhancing Your School w/ Augmented Reality Eileen Jones & Jennifer Sidlow Oak Lawn Community High School Oak Lawn, Illinois February 2016

“ I can understand augmented reality. I am cognizant of various types. I can distinguish some of the perks/pitfalls of each. Learning Targets

What is Augmented Reality?  Live view of physical world enhanced by tech  Allows for interaction & active learning  Can include sound, video, graphics, etc.  Commonly called “AR” Note: It is NOT the same as virtual reality. That is when the technology replaces the real world, not enhances it.

SAMR Model - created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura Designed to help educators infuse tech into teaching & learning.

SAMR Model - created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura Original Assignment - Give overview of locale, handwritten with cut/paste magazine photos Use presentation software, such as Powerpoint or Prezi Incorporate interactive multimedia (audio, video) to be more engaging Create a digital travel brochure with multimedia and student- created video Explore locale via Google Earth; seek out & include interviews with locals

Opportunities for Augmented Enhancement Connected Sports or Academic Hall of Fame Animated Periodic Table 3D Visualizations of 2D Drawings Interactive School Newspaper or Yearbook 3D Solar System Interactive Word Wall Interactive Art Gallery or Bulletin Board Displays Interactive Globe 3D Human Body The ideas are endless!

Books/Coloring Pages  Can be read/colored without the app, but pages are enhanced.  Quiver App (formerly ColAR) is an easy starting place for AR.

Perks  Appealing  Engaging/interactive  Impactful  Adds a new level of understanding  Modification on SAMR scale Books/Coloring Pages Pitfalls  Trigger affected by light  Not all apps are free  Distracts from reading

Place your screenshot here Aurasma World’s leading augmented reality platform https://www.aurasma.com/customers/

Sports Medicine: Vocabulary Word Wall Aurasma App: ●Fast/easy to link picture to video ●The video hovers over the picture, engaging effect. Studio Aurasma (on computer): ●Allows for more advanced manipulation ●Can link a Google Form at the end of a video.

Perks  Appealing  Engaging  Impactful  Broad customer base  Redefinition on SAMR scale Aurasma Pitfalls  Triggers can be tricky to attach -use black/white images  Triggers affected by light -take photo in same space you will view it  App can freeze up -don’t have full class at same time

Daqri Elements 4D Part toy. Part chemistry experiment. A whole new way of learning. http://elements4d.daqri.com/#intro Place your screenshot here

Perks  Appealing  Engaging  Hands-on  Great supplemental resource, especially for experiments too dangerous to perform in labs  Redefinition on SAMR scale Daqri Elements 4D Pitfalls  Wooden blocks not available for purchase  Time required to cut/tape paper blocks

Blippar Turning the world into an interactive learning environment https://blippar.com/en/learn-more/blippar- for-education/ Place your screenshot here

Perks  More features/buttons offered than other AR  Can choose several button options per augmented image as link to  social media  video  website  Great customer service  Redefinition on SAMR scale Blippar Pitfalls  Requires some trial and error of public content  Some items just take you to a website, not interactive  Some content can be hit or miss

Google Cardboard Virtual reality in a simple, fun, and affordable way https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/ Place your screenshot here

Perks  Affordable  Easy-to-assemble  Immersive experience Google Cardboard Pitfalls  Requires smartphone  Can make people seasick  Only one student use at a time  Head strap is additional cost  Lack of content apps  Quality could vary by user smartphone
