3. Early Life He was born in San Jose, California.
He attended Heald College at the age of 13 but dropped out shortly after.
He became a produce broker (fruits and vegetables) for L. Scatena and Company.
He started his own business as a produce broker and was very successful.

4. Banking Career In 1904 he founded the Bank of Italy.
