1 Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical,
TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electromagnetic, Electrical, Chemical and Thermal

2 What is Energy Energy can be defined as the ability to do work.
Whenever work is done, energy is transformed or is transferred from one system to another.

3 Main Forms of Energy Mechanical (Kinetic & Potential)
Electromagnetic (Radiant) Electrical Chemical Thermal (Heat) Sound Energy Nuclear Energy

4 What is Mechanical Energy?
Energy due to a object’s motion (kinetic) or position (potential). The bowling ball has mechanical energy. When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins!

5 Examples of Mechanical Energy

6 What is Electromagnetic Energy?
Radiant energy Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands

7 What is Electrical Energy?
Energy caused by the movement of electrons Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

8 What is Chemical Energy?
Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.

9 Examples of Chemical Energy

10 What is Thermal Energy? Heat energy The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

11 Nuclear Energy Is stored in the nucleus of an atom and is released during nuclear reactions. Ex: Nuclear fission and fusion Nuclear power plants use fission reactions to produce electricity.

12 Kinetic & Potential Energy
Energy of motion Formula: KE = ½ mv² KE = kinetic energy (J) m = mass (kg) v = velocity (m/s) Energy of position or stored energy Formula: PE = mgh PE = potential energy (J) m = mass (kg) g = gravity (m/s²) h = height (m)

13 Practice Problems How much kinetic energy does a 10 kg object traveling 3 m/s? How much potential energy does a 4 kg object have that is 5 meters off the ground? Calculate how much energy a 7 kg object sitting on a 3 meter ledge has. A 4 kg rock is rolling 25 m/s. How much energy does the rock have? A rolling ball has 24 joules of kinetic energy and is rolling 3 m/s. Find its mass.

14 ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY
QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

15 QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

16 QUIZ TIME! What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY

17 What types of energy are shown below?
Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)

18 What type of energy is shown below?
Chemical Energy

19 What types of energy are shown below?
Electrical, Mechanical and Electromagnetic Energy

20 What type of energy is shown below?
Chemical Energy (yummy)

21 What type of energy is shown below?
