2 Agenda What is Toolbox Talk? Why TBT is important? Who should present?
How to structure? How to deliver a TBT TOP TIPS?

3 What is Toolbox Talk (TBT)?

4 What is Toolbox Talk (TBT)?
Short talks that focus on a specific job/topic carried out by the supervisor or the senior person. e.g. High pressure testing, manual handling, lifting … TBT is a two way communication responsibility. Help inform inexperienced workers and provide reminders to experienced workers of correct control measures.

5 Why TBT is Important?

6 Why TBT is important? We provide this training to improve the quality of the TBT at AlMansoori & encourage HSEQ to become everyone’s responsibility. Determine the responsibilities of employees & supervisors. Allow supervisor and workers to explore the risks of specific HSEQ issues and think about ways to deal with them. Encourage worker engagement.

7 TBT Key Message Not Delivered?
LTI 12-Jan-13 Finger Injury Crushed the tip of right hand index finger Poor Communication No Hazard Identification

8 TBT Key Message Not Delivered?
LTI 20-March-2013 Hand and Finger Injury Crashing his middle finger of Right hand Poor Communication Inadequate Supervision No Hazard Identification Insufficient Resources

9 Who should present?

10 Who should present TBT? Do not need to be an expert but…
Some experience of training is useful. Good communication skills are essential. Presenter needs to be serious about HSEQ and take the TBT seriously. Recommended that all crewmembers should be given an opportunity to prepare and present TBT.

11 How to structure?

12 How to structure TBT? Objectives of the Job
Brief the people about the nature of the job, and set the objectives of carrying out the job. Examples: 1- Pressure Testing. 2- Spooling. 3- Fishing Job. 4- Lifting Operations (crane, forklift … etc.).

13 How to structure TBT? Plan and Procedures
Decide on the topic, choose something that involves the current job, an accident that has occurred, or something relevant to the audience. * Always follow AlMansoori (HSEQ IMS Procedures & your SOP) 2 3 1

14 Responsibilities/Supervision
How to structure TBT? Responsibilities/Supervision Assign the responsibilities clearly to each person and ensure that everybody understand then keep monitoring them. Activate the two way communication between employee & supervisor.

15 How to structure TBT? HAZARDS
Identify anything that has the potential to cause harm/loss by reviewing the risk assessment/THA for the job (Manual handling, lifting … etc.).

16 How to structure TBT? Empowered to Stop
Everybody has the right to stop the job if they feel it is unsafe. “Provide persons working for and on behalf of AlMansoori with necessary training, resources and systems, as well as to empower them to stop any unsafe work.”

17 Manpower and Skills Required
How to structure TBT? Manpower and Skills Required Assign sufficient number of employees with the appropriate competency for the job, make sure the assigned person(s) have enough experience and all the required training and certificates.

18 How to structure TBT? Equipment to be Used
Select the proper equipment for the job, inspect it and make sure it is safe to use, then choose the competent person to operate it.

19 Personnel Protective Equipment
How to structure TBT? Personnel Protective Equipment Wear the correct and suitable PPE for the job and make sure the person was trained on how to use it.

20 How to structure TBT? Permit to Work (PTW)
Make sure that you have a PTW when required, such as operations on well head location, confined spaces, welding … etc.

21 How to structure TBT? Worksite Environment
Identify the work environment (cold, hot, humidity, slippery etc.) that may affect the job.

22 How to structure TBT? Other Activities
Check if there are any other activities (SIMOPS) that may be carried at the same time, in the nearby location that may cause a hazard or interfere with your activities. Example: Lifting and pressure testing at the same time.

23 How to structure TBT? Isolation (lock out)
Ensure that Lockout devices identify the individual users, and that: Discuss the importance of the lock out/tagout. It is used when performing maintenance or you need the isolation of an energy source e.g. electricity or mechanical.

24 How to structure TBT? Access and Exit
Identify all exit routes and ensure they are clear and unobstructed. Exit door must be unlocked. The number of exit routes must be adequate. Must meet minimum height & width requirements. Muster point, wind socks & confined spaces to be clearly set.

25 How to structure TBT? No Blame Culture
Report any mistake that happened immediately, report all accident, failure, equipment damage, we will not blame you unless there is evidence of intentional.

26 How to structure TBT? Other Information
Check if there is any other information related to the job/topic. That needs to be discussed to ensure the job is successful and harm free.

27 Encourage Questions and Two Way Discussions
How to structure TBT? Encourage Questions and Two Way Discussions Tell workers to ask any questions as you go along. Tell them not to be afraid to ask. At the end of the TBT ask some crew members to repeat the TBT to verify their understanding.

28 Remember? Allow enough time e.g. 10-15 minutes.
Do not assume you need to know all the information – draw on others’ experience. Do not read from a script. You will lose the interest of your audience if you do!
