4. Where Did Soccer Come From?
Soccer as we know it today was invented in England in 1848 and was called football.
The first soccer club was formed in 1863.
The first competition was organized in 1872.
The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) was founded in 1904.

5. Where Did Soccer Come From?
Soccer became an Olympic sport in 1908.
The World Cup of soccer is held every 4 years and is the most globally covered sporting event in the world.
Today, 203 countries are FIFA members.

6. FUN FACTS Over 90% of the world’s soccer balls are made in Pakistan.
During the course of a full game of soccer, players may run up to 6 or 7 miles.
More than 90,000 fans watched the 1999 Women’s World Cup championship when the United States defeated China. To date, this is the largest live crowd in the United States to watch a women’s sporting event.

Now that you know the history, let’s learn the rules.

13. Objectives of Soccer
The objective of soccer is for one team to send the ball into the opposing team’s goal by moving it with their feet or any other part of the body but the arms or hands.
Two teams with 11 players including a goalie play two 45-minute periods with a halftime of 15 minutes.
If the game is tied after regulation, two 15-minute overtime periods are played.
If still tied, a penalty shoot-out takes place.

14. Objective of Soccer cont.
The team in possession of the ball is called the offensive team.
The offensive team passes the ball around the field, looking to set up a good scoring opportunity.
The defensive team tries to prevent the offensive team from scoring and tries to gain possession of the ball themselves.
The team with the most goals at the end of regulation time is the winner.

15. REFEREES Controls the game to ensure proper and fair play
There is one center head referee and two linesman
Head referee has full discretion of what fouls to call: either in-direct fouls (can’t score directly from the kick) or direct fouls (can score directly from kick)

RED CARD (EJECTION): · Violent strike or attempt to strike · Foul or abusive language to anyone · Repeated misconduct · Using your hands to stop the ball on purpose in the goalie box that stops a goal from scoring · Intent to harm your opponent · Any foul ruled rough by the referee

Explanations of the lines…go back and forth using the buttons to understand
Touchlines: The two lines marking the boundaries of the longest part of the field.
Goal line: The line marking the boundaries of the shortest part of the field.
Halfway line: The line that segments the field into two halves.
Center Mark: The circle at the middle of the field. It should be 10 yards in diameter.

5. Goal Area: A box surrounding the goal that is 6 yards out from the goal line and in 18 yards long.
Penalty Area: Another box surrounding the goal that is 18 yards out from the goal line and is 36 yards long.
Penalty Mark: A ‘dot’ on the field that is 12 yards in front of the goal, equal distance to each goal post, or in other words, centered.

27. What happens if the ball goes out of bounds?
Corner Kick: After the ball has gone out of play over the goal line, the ball is kicked from the corner of the field. The team that kicked the ball out of play must defend the corner kick.
Goal Kick: A kick to put the ball back into play from anywhere inside the six-yard box. It is usually taken after the ball has gone out of play over the goal line when an opposing player has touched it last.
Throw In: An overhead throw, using both arms, from the touchline. Used to restart the match after the ball has gone out of play.

32. FORWARD
They play near the other team’s goal and are charged primarily with scoring goals.
Forwards playing near the touchlines are called ‘wings’ while those in the middle of the field are called ‘strikers’.
Since their main focus is scoring goals, power is more important than finesse.
These players should be quick runners, with moderate to strong leg strength. Accuracy in shooting is a must for these players.

33. MIDFIELD
Their primary task is to steal the ball and redirect it to the forwards, and to take shots at the goal.
As the name implies, you can tell where they play, in the middle of the field.
These players should be quick on their feet and have excellent tackling abilities. Accurate passing is required.

34. DEFENSE
They play near their own teams’ goal and are primarily assigned to prevent shots being taken on their goal by the other team.
They also receive the ball from the goalie and are supposed to get the ball to the midfielders.
They should have good leg strength and be able to kick the ball a long distance when clearing the ball.

35. GOALKEEPER
Plays directly in front of the ball and is the only player allowed to use their hands to control the ball.
Should always wear a different color jersey so that they can be identified easily and quickly.
They should have excellent hand-eye coordination and have quick reactions.
They should have strong legs and be able to clear the zone.

3. A ball sized appropriately for their age. The regulation soccer ball is a size 5. Six to ten year old players will generally use a size 4 ball.

41. Equipment cont.
4. Shin-guards that are plastic or fiberglass that protect the shins from contact with other players. Each player should be required to wear them to both practice and games.
5. Soccer socks, which are very long and go over the shin guards. Every player should wear these to practice as well as games.

Jersey: normally has long sleeves to help protect goalie’s elbows. Different color than the rest of the team.
Gloves: help to protect the goalie’s hands and to help get a better grip on the ball when making a save.
