1 Foreshadowing the Fate of Coyotito
The Pearl Foreshadowing the Fate of Coyotito Pranay Mittal and James Dong J: The Pearl Foreshadowing the Fate of Coyotito P: Slideshow created by Pranay Mittal and James Dong

2 Question What are two examples of foreshadowing of Coyotito’s death in Chapter 6? P: Here’s the question that we will answer in this slideshow What are 2 examples of foreshadowing of Coyotito’s death in Chapter 6? P: before we start, a little background information J: During chapter 6, Kino and his wife Juana and his son, Coyotito, were journeying toward the city to sell the pearl for a reasonable price However, 3 trackers were sent after Kino. One of the trackers, the watcher, had a gun.

3 Example 1: Coyotito’s Name
The name Coyotito literally means “little coyote” in Spanish. J: The name Coyotito literally means “little coyote” in Spanish.

4 Importance Watcher represents a hunter Coyotito represents a baby coyote P: The importance of his name is that the watcher, the one with the gun, represented a hunter in the wilderness, and Coyotito’s name, little coyote, foreshadows that Coyotito will fall prey to the watcher.

5 Textual Evidence 1 “And then from above came a little murmuring cry. The watcher turned his head to listen and then he stood up, and one of the sleepers stirred on the ground and awakened and asked quietly, ‘What is it?’ ‘I don’t know,’ said the watcher. ‘It sounded like a cry, almost like a human – like a baby.’” (Steinbeck 86) J: The following is Textual evidence for Coyotito’s name, in which a conversation between two of the trackers is shown. P: And then from above came a little murmuring cry. The watcher turned his head to listen and then he stood up, and one of the sleepers stirred on the ground and awakened, and asked quietly, P: ‘What is it?’ (deep voice) ‘I don’t know,’ (rough voice) P: said the watcher. P: ‘It sounded like a cry, almost like a human – like a baby.’” J: This passage showed that the watcher mistook Coyotito as a coyote, foreshadowing his death. J: Now, onto our next example.

6 Example 2: Coyotito Crying
Kino places a large emphasis on Coyotito’s silence. P: Steinbeck places great emphasis on the need for Coyotito to remain silent and refrain from crying

7 Importance The reader can then predict that Coyotito will indeed cry.
J: Because Kino obsesses so much over Coyotito possibly crying, the reader infers that Coyotito will cry. P: And if Coyotito were to cry, he would be giving away the location of the family to the trackers, sacrificing their lives.

8 Textual Evidence 2 “‘I am afraid only that the baby may cry. You must see that he does not cry.’ ‘He will not cry,’ she said, and she raised the baby’s face to her own and looked into his eyes and he stared solemnly back at her. ‘He knows,’ said Juana.” (Steinbeck 81) J: The following is textual evidence for Coyotito crying, in which a conversation between Kino and Juana is shown. P: I am afraid only that the baby may cry. You must see that he does not cry.’ P: He will not cry,’ she said, and she raised the baby’s face to her own and looked into his eyes and he stared solemnly back at her. ‘He knows,’ said Juana.”

9 Textual Evidence 3 “He heard a murmur behind him. Juana was whispering, ‘Coyotito.’ She was begging him to be quiet. Kino heard the baby whimper, and he knew from the muffled sounds that Juana had covered his head with her shawl.” (Steinbeck 82) J: The following is another example of textual evidence for Coyotito’s crying, in which Kino hears Juana taking care of Coyotito. P: “He heard a murmur behind him. Juana was whispering, ‘Coyotito.’ She was begging him to be quiet. Kino heard the baby whimper, and he knew from the muffled sounds that Juana had covered his head with her shawl.” J: Both of these examples show that Kino and Juana both want Coyotito to stay silent, and the second hints at Coyotito possibly crying. P: Thank you listening to our presentation. If it did not please you, here is a cute cat.
