A Powerful Bond: Oxytocin Oxytocin is the powerful hormone involved in bonding, sex, and childbirth as well as in relaxation and feelings of calm. It is the mirror image of the stress hormone adrenaline, which triggers the “fight or flight” systems in the body. Oxytocin is called the “BONDING HORMONE”.

One of the reasons that it can be difficult to end a physical relationship, even if there is abuse, is the physiological response of the body to sexual activity. Sex creates a physiological bond between two people. This bonding occurs through the release of a hormone called oxytocin. For women, oxytocin is released in the body during childbirth, nursing, and sexual activity. In males, oxytocin is released during orgasm.
