1 Lesson 28 – Nephi and Lehi in Prison

2 Purpose To encourage the children to make the Savior the foundation of their lives by choosing to live his teachings.

3 Follow the Prophet 1. Adam was a prophet, first one that we know. In a place called Eden, he helped things to grow. Adam served the Lord by following his ways. We are his descendants in the latter days. 2. Enoch was a prophet; he taught what was good. People in his city did just what they should. When they were so righteous that there was no sin, Heav’nly Father took them up to live with him. 3. Noah was a prophet called to preach the word, Tried to cry repentance, but nobody heard. They were busy sinning—Noah preached in vain. They wished they had listened when they saw the rain. 4. Abraham the prophet prayed to have a son, So the Lord sent Isaac as the chosen one. Isaac begat Jacob, known as Israel; Jacob’s sons were twelve tribes, so the Bible tells. 5. Moses was a prophet sent to Israel. He would lead them to the promised land to dwell. They were slow to follow, or so it appears. They were in the wilderness for forty years. 6. Samuel was a prophet chosen as a boy. Hannah promised God her son would serve with joy. In the tabernacle, Samuel heard his name; He was called by God and answered, “Here I am!” 7. Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away, But he later learned to listen and obey. When we really try, the Lord won’t let us fail: That’s what Jonah learned deep down inside the whale. 8. Daniel was a prophet. He refused to sin; So the king threw Daniel in the lion’s den. Angels calmed the lions, and the king soon saw Daniel’s pow’r was great, for he obeyed God’s law. 9. Now we have a world where people are confused. If you don’t believe it, go and watch the news. We can get direction all along our way, If we heed the prophets—follow what they say. Chorus Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; don’t go astray. Follow the prophet, follow the prophet, Follow the prophet; he knows the way. Words and music: Duane E. Hiatt, b © IRI

5 Our Opening prayer will be given by: (Enter name here)

6 If you wanted to build a house, do you think that you would want to build it on a rock or on sand?
What do you think will happen to the rock if a flood came? What do you think will happen to the sand if a flood came? Starting with Rock will give you a very firm foundation.

7 (Press stop when credits show up)
Let’s watch a short video about a wise man who built his house upon the rock, And a foolish man who built his house upon the sand. Watch the two experiments to see what happens if you build on the sand or if you build on a rock. Watch video (Press stop when credits show up)

8 As you saw in the video, When you build your house upon the sand, it can get washed away.

9 When you build your house upon the rock, it stands strong.

10 Building a firm foundation with Jesus as the base, will always make you able to stand strong.

11 Our lesson today is about Nephi and Lehi and how they had strong testimonies of Jesus Christ.
Nephi and Lehi helped many Lamanites gain testimonies of Jesus Christ. We too can build our lives on the only sure foundation, Jesus Christ. He can be the rock we need to stand firm.

13 Nephi and Lehi were Helaman’s sons.
Helaman wanted them to be righteous like the Lehi and Nephi who left Jerusalem.

14 Helaman taught his sons to believe in Jesus Christ.
They learned that forgiveness comes through faith and repentance.

15 Nephi and Lehi went to teach the word of God to the Nephites and Lamanites.
Thousands of people were baptized.

16 When Nephi and Lehi went to the land of Nephi, a Lamanite army threw them into prison and did not give them food for many days.

17 The Lamanites went to the prison to kill Nephi and Lehi but could not because they were protected by a ring of fire that would have burned anyone who tried to touch them.

18 Nephi and Lehi were not burned by the fire.
They told the Lamanites that God’s power was protecting them.

19 The ground and the prison walls began to shake.
A dark cloud surrounded the people in the prison, and they were afraid.

20 A voice from above the darkness spoke
A voice from above the darkness spoke. It was quiet like a whisper, but everyone could hear it.

21 The voice told the people to repent and stop trying to kill Nephi and Lehi.

22 The voice spoke three times, and the ground and prison walls continued to shake
The Lamanites could not run away because it was too dark and they were too scared.

23 A Nephite who had been a Church member saw that Nephi’s and Lehi’s faces were shining through the darkness.

24 Nephi and Lehi were looking toward heaven and talking.
The man told the Lamanites to look. They wondered whom Nephi and Lehi were talking to.

25 The man, who was named Aminadab, told the Lamanites that Nephi and Lehi were talking to angels.

26 The Lamanites asked Aminadab how to get rid of the dark cloud.
He told them to repent and pray until they had faith in Jesus Christ.

27 The Lamanites prayed until the dark cloud was gone.

28 When the darkness left, the people saw a pillar of fire all around them.
The fire did not burn them or the prison walls.

29 The Lamanites felt great joy, and the Spirit of God filled their hearts.

30 A voice whispered, saying they would be comforted because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

31 The Lamanites looked up to see where the voice had come from
They saw angels coming down from heaven.

32 About 300 people saw and heard what happened in the prison.
They went and told others.

33 Most of the Lamanites believed them and put away their weapons.

34 The Lamanites stopped hating the Nephites and gave back the land they had taken.
The Lamanites became more righteous than the Nephites.

35 Many Lamanites went with Nephi and Lehi and taught both Nephites and Lamanites.

64 Helaman 5:6 6 Behold, my sons, I desire that ye should remember to keep the commandments of God; and I would that ye should declare unto the people these words. Behold, I have given unto you the names of our first aparents who came out of the land of Jerusalem; and this I have done that when you remember your names ye may remember them; and when ye remember them ye may remember their works; and when ye remember their works ye may know how that it is said, and also written, that they were bgood. Return

Return

68 Helaman 5:11 11 And he hath power given unto him from the Father to redeem them from their sins because of repentance; therefore he hath asent his angels to declare the tidings of the conditions of repentance, which bringeth unto the power of the Redeemer, unto the salvation of their souls. Return

69 Helaman 5:12 12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the arock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your bfoundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty cstorm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. Return

70 Helaman 5:12 12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the arock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your bfoundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty cstorm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. 74 Helaman 5:29, 32 29 And it came to pass that there came a avoice as if it were above the cloud of darkness, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my bservants whom I have sent unto you to declare good tidings. 32 And behold the voice came again, saying: aRepent ye, repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand; and seek no more to destroy my servants. 76 Helaman 5:43–47 43 And it came to pass that when they cast their eyes about, and saw that the cloud of darkness was dispersed from overshadowing them, behold, they saw that they were aencircled about, yea every soul, by a pillar of fire. 44 And aNephi and bLehi were in the midst of them; yea, they were encircled about; yea, they were as if in the midst of a flaming fire, yet it did harm them not, neither did it take hold upon the walls of the prison; and they were filled with that cjoy which is unspeakable and full of glory. 45 And behold, the aHoly Spirit of God did come down from heaven, and did enter into their hearts, and they were filled as if with fire, and they could bspeak forth marvelous words. 46 And it came to pass that there came a voice unto them, yea, a pleasant voice, as if it were a whisper, saying: 47 aPeace, peace be unto you, because of your faith in my Well Beloved, who was from the foundation of the world. And it came to pass that the earth shook again, and the walls trembled. Return
