3 Ancient Chinese Philosophies
Legalism Confucianism Daoism Belief that the government must control people through strict laws -Strict laws were needed -Harsh punishments -Forced people to obey the laws -Strong government was needed People were forced to obey the laws by being afraid of the punishments Confucius taught that order would return to China if society was organized around 5 relationships. -father/ son -elder brother/junior brother -husband/wife -friend/friend -ruler/subject Key to happiness in China was to RESPECT ALL people. -proper conduct- Confucius believed that good conduct and respect began at home. Filial piety- treating parents with respect -clear roles was established in society and at home Taught that people could find virtue by living in harmony with nature. ALL things are guided by a universal force. Acceptance of things/events as they were “It is what it is” “Let it Be” Yin- (black) – cold, dark, & mysterious Yang – (white) – warm, bright, & light The forces complement each other. Always changing and evolving Understanding the yin and yang, helps a person understand how he or she fit into this world. *Philosophy the study of basic truths and ideas about the universe.
