5 Suzette’s Sprint to Science
It is now 8:59 am, but when the bell rings at 9:00 am Suzette will be late for Science class for the third time this week. She must get from one side of the school to the other by hurrying down three different hallways. She runs down the first hallway, a distance of 35.0 m, at a speed of 3.50 m/s. The second hallway is filled with students, and she covers its 48.0 m length at an average speed of 1.20 m/s. The final hallway is empty, and Suzette spring its 60.0 m length at a speed of 5.00 m/s

26 PHYSICS UNIT Chapter 11 - Motion
Chapter Summary PHYSICS UNIT Chapter Motion

27 Frame of Reference A frame of reference is necessary to describe motion accurately FoR is a system of objects not moving with respect to one another Relative motion describes movement from different FoRs Ex: Looking at someone sitting next to you in a car vs. someone standing on the street corner watching the car vs. the billboard across the street

28 Distance vs Displacement
Distance is the total length of the path between two points Displacement is a vector describing the ending point compared to the starting point. It includes: The direction from starting point The length of a straight line from the starting point to the ending point The SI unit for length is the meter (m)

29 Solve… A caterpillar travels 5 m east, 2 m north, 7 meters west, and 3 m south.  a. What is the caterpillar’s total distance?  b. What is the caterpillar’s displacement? 2. A science textbook is moved once around the perimeter of a table that is 1m by 2m and ends up in its initial position. a. What is the books total distance? b. What is the book’s displacement?

30 Average Speed Speed is the change in distance divided by the change in time V= D T Variations of the formula T= D and D=V x T V Units of SPEED and VELOCITY are m/s The SI unit for time is second (s) Instantaneous Speed is how fast a speed is changing at a specific instant (speedometer)

31 Velocity Velocity is a vector.
To describe a vector you must have both a magnitude (some kind of number) and a direction Ex : 5 m south, 10 km left, inches forward Circular paths experience a continuous change in velocity because the direction is constantly changing

32 Velocity Combine velocities by vector addition
If both are in the same direction ADD If they are in different directions SUBTRACT

33 Solve… Headwind Tailwind

34 Solve… A runner completes a 10.0 km race in exactly 30 minutes.
What is the runner’s average speed in km/min? What is the runner’s average speed in km/hr? When the outdoor emergency warning siren at Cheryl’s school was tested, the sound from the siren took 7 s to reach her house located 2.4 km from the school. What is the speed of the sound of the siren in m/s?

35 Graphs Distance Time graphs show speed (m/s) and are linear graphs.
The slope of the line (rise/run) is the speed A Speed Time graph shows acceleration (m/s2) Nonlinear (curved) graphs show changing acceleration

36 Graphs Section 11.2

37 Acceleration Acceleration is ANY change in speed or direction (any change in velocity) Acceleration can be positive (speeding up) Or negative (slowing down) Or a result of changing direction (turning) Instantaneous Acceleration is how fast a velocity is changing at a specific instant

38 Acceleration Acceleration of Gravity (Free Fall) is 9.8 m/s2
Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the change in time a = (Vf – Vi) T Units of Acceleration are m/s2 Acceleration of Gravity (Free Fall) is 9.8 m/s2

39 Solve… An elevator is moving upward with a speed of 11 m/s. Three seconds later, the elevator is still moving upward but its speed has been reduced to 5 m/s. What is the elevator’s acceleration? A plane starts to take off from a runway at 70 km/hr. It take the plane 30 seconds to get to that speed. What is the plane’s acceleration?

40 a. What is the Girl Scout’s total distance?
Quick Chapter 11 Quiz Problem Review… SHOW ALL YOUR WORK and INCLUDE THE CORRECT UNITS 1. Distance and Displacement An ambitious girl scout planned her cookie selling route: from her home she walked 5 blocks east, 2 blocks north, 7 blocks west, 3 blocks south, 3 blocks east and 1 block north. a. What is the Girl Scout’s total distance? b. What is the Girl Scout’s displacement from her home?

41 Quick Chapter 11 Quiz Problem Review… SHOW ALL YOUR WORK and INCLUDE THE CORRECT UNITS
 2. Average Speed What is the average speed of a helicopter that flies 50 km in 20 minutes and then 30 km in 10 minutes?   3. Acceleration An elevator is moving upward with a speed of 16m/s. Four seconds later, the elevator stops on the sixteenth floor. What was the elevator’s acceleration?

42

43 Chapter 11 Formulas Average Speed Acceleration
V = D D = T * V T = D T V Acceleration A = (Vf – Vi) T = (Vf-Vi) T A Show your work! Include units!
