6 HOMEWORK # 1 Available at CS101 Website-> Instructors-> Akhila Kondai ->Assignments Due by 11:59 pm on Friday 09/13/2013 After the 11:59 pm, any submission is counted as being 1 day late. For each late day, 20% penalty will be given If you submit late, you have to notify me by . You can attempt to submit your assignment multiple times before the due date, but only the LAST submission will be graded.

8 instructions Following the instructions is important.
Please read each and every instruction carefully. Make sure that you execute the instructions in the order given.

9 Step 1 You will have to first download the data files. Do not try to open the files by double clicking on them. Save the files Extract/Unzip the data files to a location in your computer. Need not open xml files outside Excel.

11 Step 4:Importing Xml File
Make sure that the data XML Files are downloaded on your system To import the data of the file into excel sheet open Excel and follow these steps: 1) Select the "Data" ribbon 2) From the "Get External Data" group (should be top left), click on "From Other Sources" 3) From the drop down list, select "From XML Data Import" 4) Find the .xml file on your computer and Open it 5) Then a message might pops up asking for creating a schema, just hit OK 6) "Import Data" box is going to pop. Select the "XML table in existing worksheet" and put the starting cell appropriately($A$3)

Field names appear in the top row as column headings Field names should be short, but descriptive A record is a complete set of data for an entity Each record is listed in a row of the table Do not insert blank rows in the table Each record has something unique about it

27 Sorting Data Excel allows you to sort a spreadsheet by alphabetical or numerical or chronological order. Records can be sorted in ascending or descending order Sorting arranges records in a table Sort on one column Sort on multiple columns

28 Sorting by One Column Excel offers several ways to sort a single column Data type Options Explanation Text Sort A to Z Arranges data in alphabetical order. Sort Z to A Arranges data in reverse alphabetical order. Dates Sort Oldest to Newest Displays data in chronological order. Sort Newest to Oldest Displays data in reverse chronological order. Values Sort Smallest to Largest Arranges values in sequential order. Sort Largest to Smallest Arranges values in descending order. Use any of the following techniques to sort on a single field: Click Sort & Filter in the Editing group on the Home tab. Click Sort A to Z, Sort Z to A, or Sort in the Sort & Filter group on the Data tab. Right-click the field to sort, point to Sort from the shortcut menu, and select the type of sort desired.

Sheet References You can reference data from another sheet just like you can reference data from your current sheet. Flip to the Salary Stats sheet in Example2 file In cell B1 type =AVERAGE( For entering the Range Switch to the Employee Info sheet and select D2:D10 and hit enter while you are on the same sheet Then cell B1 in Salary Stats sheet should become =AVERAGE(’Employee Info’!D2:D10) Repeat the same process for Total Salaries

33 Total row A total row appears as the last row of a table to display summary statistics, such as Sum, Max, Min, Average etc.

Conditional Formatting highlights or emphasizes cells that meet certain conditions Highlight cells rules Top/Bottom rules Data bars Color scales Icon sets Can create new rules based on your own conditions or using formulas

35 Locking /Unlocking a worksheet
If a worksheet is “protected” , meaning that the locking property is on, then all cells are locked and no data can be entered. Locking a worksheet Home ribbon -> Cells group -> Format Cells -> Protect sheet… Enter a password (twice) Click OK Unlocking Home ribbon -> Cells group -> Format Cells -> Unprotect sheet…

An outline is a hierarchical structure of data Grouping and Ungrouping Data Grouping is a process of joining related rows or columns of related data
