There is more to being an entrepreneur than just having a good idea, though. Dave Thomas spent many years working in restaurants, and had a great career with Kentucky Fried Chicken, when he decided to leave his safe job to try and start his own restaurant. After Bill Gates received an almost perfect score on the SAT, he went on to study at Harvard, but instead of choosing to take a comfortable job in the growing field of technology, he spent all of his time and money creating a new type of software company. Andy decided to turn over a new leaf. Every night before he went to bed, he spent five minutes laying out his clothes, packing up his backpack, and setting his alarm clock. Not only was he ready on time every day from then on, but he even had enough time for his favorite breakfast, pancakes and sausage, rather than grabbing a Pop-tart as he ran out the door. 56 Goods had to be rationed during World War II
Understand that theme refers to the implied or stated message about life and the world What is the theme of the passage? Opportunity cost is an important part of everyday life, but is not a term most people are familiar with. For example, when a family decides to go to a family reunion in New York for their summer vacation trip, it means not going to the beach for summer vacation that year. Missing the beach trip for the family reunion in an opportunity cost. There are many times during history that people have had to make decisions. When goods were rationed during World War II, Mom might have to give up iced tea for the month in order to have enough of the rationed sugar to make Junior a birthday cake. A woman who decided to join the Navy as a clerk would have to postpone her dream of going to college until the war was over. Goods had to be rationed during World War II Choices include vacations, rationing, and college. You shouldn’t be afraid to try something new. Sometimes making a choice means giving something up.

Lindsay asked why she didn’t get any, and her mom told her, “Oh, I’m sure you won’t like them.” Lindsay kept asking until her mother agreed to let her have some. Use knowledge of common organizational structures Choose the organizational structure. When the Civil War ended, former slaves were finally free. In many parts of the country, particularly the South, former slaves were often discriminated against and denied their rights. Even though the 15th amendment gave all men the right to vote, and, some years later, the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, many African-Americans were still kept from voting. One way some African-Americans were prevented from voting was by poll taxes, a fee that was charged in order to vote. Many African-Americans who were poor could not afford to vote. This unfair treatment led Congress and the Senate to propose and pass the 24th amendment, which would make it illegal to charge a poll tax to vote. Soon after, three-fourths of the states ratified the amendment, and the result is that no one has to pay in order to vote. Chronological order Classification scheme Cause and effect Logical order

59 Classification scheme Cause and effect Logical order
Use knowledge of common organizational structures Choose the organizational structure. The Soviet Union was made up of Russia and a number of other communist states. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, the Soviet Union spent a large amount of money in an arms race with the United States. This made the shortage of goods in the Soviet Union more of a problem than it already was. When Mikhail Gorbachev took power in 1985, he tried to make changes to make life in the Soviet Union better, such as giving Soviet citizens freedom of speech. Soon after, many of the Soviet states that were different ethnic groups began to fight for their independence. By 1991, the Soviet Union was beginning to collapse, and it 1992 it became a commonwealth of independent republics. The Cold War was over, and the Soviet Union was no longer a communist country. Chronological order Classification scheme Cause and effect Logical order

60 Classification scheme Cause and effect Logical order
Use knowledge of common organizational structures Choose the organizational structure. What makes you who you are? Many of our characteristics are learned behaviors, but genes control many of our traits, especially our physical appearance. Whether you will be short, average height, or tall depends on the genetic code passed on to you through both of your parents. Likewise, the color of your eyes, skin, and hair are genetic traits that come from your ancestors. Anyone who has commented that you have your father’s nose or your grandmother’s curly hair is noticing this genetic link. Even minor traits, like the length of your eyelashes, or whether or not you can curl your tongue are all determined by the genes passed on to you through your mother and father. 61 Classification scheme Cause and effect Logical order
Use knowledge of common organizational structures Choose the organizational structure. The animal kingdom is made up of many-celled creatures that feed on living or once-living things. The animals within the animal kingdom are divided into two groups, or phylum, vertebrates and invertebrates. Most animals, 97%, are invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without a backbone. The largest class of invertebrates is insects, but there are other classes of invertebrates, such as arachnids, crustaceans, and mollusks. Most of the largest animals are vertebrates, which are animals that have a backbone. The five classes of vertebrates are mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Human beings are part of the mammal class. Chronological order Classification scheme Cause and effect Logical order

Once the party started, everyone was having fun and playing games when Todd’s dad called everyone into the living room to watch the moon landing. 63 Eye color is a trait inherited by genes, as well as eye shape.
Understand and apply knowledge of common textual features, Which would be the best choice for a concluding sentence for this paragraph? As you’ve learned, genes control many of our traits, especially our appearance, but many other characteristics are due to learned behaviors. Your brown hair is controlled by genes, but how you cut and style your hair (or if you use dyes to change the color) is a learned behavior, influenced by those around you. While we are able to communicate even when we are babies, generally by crying, the language we speak is a learned behavior. Even people who speak the same language often have different accents. Eye color is a trait inherited by genes, as well as eye shape. Where we live and the people in our life influence this and other learned behaviors.
