1 The Roman Missal 3rd Edition
The Confiteor and The Gloria

2 Sacred Scripture “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!” Psalm 51:2 “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Luke 18:13 “Glory to God in the highest…” Luke 2:14 Read aloud.

3 Opening Prayer God our Father, we are truly sorry for those times we have sinned, because You are so good and loving and deserving of all our love. We trust in Your mercy and in the mercy of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You, we give You thanks for Your great glory. Amen. Read together.

4 Objectives 1.Students will recognize that the reason we ask pardon for our sins at the beginning of Mass is because sin always damages the relationship we have with God and His Church, the family of God. We do this in a prayer called the Confiteor, which means “I confess.” 2. Students will understand that our prayers at Mass include the intercession of the Church in Heaven and on earth. 3. Students will realize that it is only after we have expressed sorrow and have accepted responsibility for our sins that we can we move to giving praise and glory to God for His merciful love. One of these expressions of prayer is the Gloria. Read the following paragraph, “Today we will learn that to truly appreciate God’s merciful love poured out in the Mass, we must first express true sorrow for our sins. This understanding of God’s mercy leads us to the praise and glory of God. We will also be learning about and practicing the Confiteor and the Gloria.” Ask for student volunteers to then read the objectives aloud.

5 “I confess to Almighty God…”
Finish this phrase… “I confess to Almighty God…” Before handing out and reading the Content Reading, have students write what they can to finish this statement. Hand out the Content Reading and have the SKIM for words they don’t know. They should circle these words in the reading. Do NOT have them read at this time! So, limit their time in doing this to avoid reading. I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

6 The Confiteor Current version I confess to almighty God, and to you,
my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God. Review the current version, having students make corrections to what they wrote (or copy it if they didn’t know if).

7 During Reading While reading paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Content Reading, write one summary statement of the two paragraphs. While reading paragraph 3 of the Content Reading, make changes to your copy of the Confiteor. Have students follow the above instructions. After they are done reading, ask for a few volunteers to share their summaries.

8 The Confiteor Current version New edition I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God. I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Read the new edition aloud and practice a few times as a class. Follow these instructions (don’t worry about the Appendix I at this time – what you need is on the slide): Here the teacher/catechist should stop, and using Appendix 1, have students practice this change in the Confiteor with a partner, especially the tapping of the chest with their hand or fist, while saying the three-fold expression of guilt. Don’t forget to make sure they are saying ―greatly‖ sinned at the beginning and ―therefore‖ instead of ―and‖ right before the words ―I ask blessed Mary.‖

9 The leads to the next prayer we will look at, the Gloria.
The sorrow for our sins expressed in the Confiteor helps us to love and praise God as we ought. The leads to the next prayer we will look at, the Gloria. Read this slide aloud. Before reading, ask if there is a student who would like to recite the current Gloria to the class.

10 During Reading While reading paragraphs 5-8 of the Content Reading, write a summary of each paragraph. Recall that a summary is your interpretation of the paragraph written in YOUR OWN WORDS! Have them read the rest of the Content Reading, following the instructions above. After the reading, ask for one or two summaries of each paragraph from students.

11 The Gloria Current version New edition
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Practice the New Edition! At this time, you can distribute Appendix I to make this easier.  After practicing a few times, ask students to look at the words they circled when skimming. Ask them to share words that they still do not know after reading. With the help of other students, explain any words that are shared.

12 Questions and Answers What is another name for the prayer, the Confiteor? I confess What gesture should be added when praying “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault?” Tap chest 3 times Where does much of the text of the Gloria come from? Sacred Scripture/the Bible What title added to the phrase “Lord Jesus Christ” helps us to understand that Jesus comes from the Father but is also co-eternal with the Father? Only Begotten Son

13 Review Today we learned that to truly appreciate God’s merciful love poured out in the Mass, we must first express true sorrow for our sins. This understanding of God’s mercy leads us to the praise and glory of God. We learned about and practiced two Mass prayers: the Confiteor, by which we show contrition for our sins, and the Gloria, which is a beautiful prayer by which we praise and glorify God. 14 Act of Hope O my God, relying on your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon for my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlasting through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen. Read together this Closing Prayer.
