After the Night of the Long Knives, the SA remained as a visible force against opponents, but not as powerful
The SS was the main terror instrument; headed by Himmler
Gestapo (Prussian secret police) came under the control of the SS and became the most important security agent of the state
The SD or Security Police was an intelligence service; elite force headed by Heydrich
The RHSA was created in 1939 to bring together all of these state security organizations

1939 – 240,000 members
Emerged as the chief police arm after the Emergency Power Decree
1933~39 – 225,000 convicted and imprisoned for political crimes
1939 – 162,000 were in ‘protective custody’ without trial
Controlled the Holocaust
Ran the concentration camps
Executed Jews, mentally ill and other undesirables
Ran the Wafen-SS (military organization) which rivaled the Wehrmacht
