4 I need two volunteers to come to the front of the class.
Face each other, and hold hands above your heads to form an area big enough for the other children to walk under.

5 These children represent a very important gate.
This gate is the entrance to the strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life.

6 2 Nephi 31:17 tells us: …For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.

7 One of the first steps to eternal life is going through the gate – being baptized.
Walk through the gate!

8 The Baptism of Jesus Christ

9 John the Baptist taught the people about Jesus Christ.
He told them to repent of their sins and be baptized. John baptized those who repented of their sins.

10 The people asked John the Baptist how to live better lives.
He told them to share with the poor, tell the truth, and be fair to others.

11 He said that Jesus Christ would soon come.
Jesus would give them the gift of the Holy Ghost.

12 One day when John the Baptist was baptizing people in the Jordan River, Jesus Christ came to him.
He asked John to baptize Him.

13 John knew that Jesus had always obeyed God’s commandments and did not need to repent.
John thought that Jesus did not need to be baptized.

14 But God had commanded all people to be baptized, so Jesus told John to baptize Him.
Jesus set an example for us by obeying God’s commandment to be baptized.

15 When Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Ghost came to Him.
God spoke from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” John the Baptist also testified that Jesus was the Son of God.

16 Discussion Time!

17 Who baptized Jesus? Let’s read Matthew 3:13 Why did John the Baptist hesitate to baptize Jesus? Let’s read Matthew 3:14

18 Why did Jesus want to be baptized?
Let’s read Matthew 3:15 & 2 Nephi 31:7, 9 Why do we need to be baptized? Let’s read John 3:5

19 What does immersion mean?
Why must we be put completely under the water when we are baptized? Let’s read 3 Nephi 11:26–28

20 What happened right after Jesus was baptized?
Let’s read Matthew 3:16–17 How do we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost? Let’s read D&C 33:15

21 How did you feel when you were baptized?

22 What did you promise when you were baptized?
What does Heavenly Father promise us? Let’s read Mosiah 18:8–13 & D&C 20:37

23 The promises between us and Heavenly Father are baptismal covenants.
When we are baptized, we covenant to: Become members of Jesus’ church. Help others. Stand as witnesses of Heavenly Father at all times and in all places. Serve Heavenly Father and keep his commandments.

24 If we keep our covenants, Heavenly Father covenants to:
Forgive our sins. Give us many blessings. Give us daily guidance through the Holy Ghost. Give us eternal life. (See Gospel Principles, chapter 20.)

25 When we go through the gateway of baptism, what are we entering?
Let’s read 2 Nephi 31:17–18

26 What must we do after baptism to gain eternal life and be able to live forever with Heavenly Father?
Let’s read 2 Nephi 31:18–20

27 This is the Fourth Article of Faith:
We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. Let’s memorize it!

28 Let’s use our scriptures to answer the following questions:
Why are we baptized? D&C 49:13 & 2 Nephi 31:18 How are we baptized? D&C 20:72–74 By whom are we baptized? D&C 20:73 When are we baptized? D&C 68:27 Enr. Act #1

29 For the remission of our sins To become members of the Church
So we can receive the gift of the Holy Ghost To be obedient To get on the strait and narrow path These are reasons why we must be baptized. How can we keep our baptismal covenants? Enr. Act #2

30 We follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ when we are baptized.
This is the story of my baptism… Enr. Act #3

31 Let’s memorize 2 Nephi 31:20 -
Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life. Enr. Act #4

32 I bear my testimony of the importance of baptism.
Baptism is the gate to the strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life.
