6 Joel

7 Who is Joel? What does “Joel” mean? Jehovah is God
When did Joel prophecy? He may have lived as early as the time of Elisha (late 800 B.C.s), or as late as the time of Jeremiah, Lehi, & Daniel (early 600s to late 500 B.C.s). Who is quoting who? He is either original and quoted by many or he synthesizes the words of former prophets before him.

8 The Prophecy of Joel Many elements of this prophecy are almost universally applicable. It applies to: Elisha’s time Jeroboam’s time Isaiah’s time Jeremiah’s time Jesus’ & Peter’s time Joseph Smith’s time Our time

9 On September 22, 1823 as the Angel Moroni taught Joseph Smith, "He
On September 22, 1823 as the Angel Moroni taught Joseph Smith, "He ... quoted the second chapter of Joel, from the twenty-eighth verse to the last. He also said that this was not yet fulfilled, but was soon to be" (JS-H 1:41).

10 President Gordon B. Hinckley
From the day that He [the Father] and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world.… President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

11 President Gordon B. Hinckley
The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: “And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. (Joel 2:28-32). President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

12 President Gordon B. Hinckley
There has been more of scientific discovery during these years than during all of the previous history of mankind. Transportation, communication, medicine, public hygiene, the unlocking of the atom, the miracle of the computer, with all of its ramifications, have blossomed forth, particularly in our own era. President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

13 President James E. Faust
“I do not believe that this great outpouring of knowledge happened by chance. All of this secular knowledge did not come solely from the creative minds of men and women. Mankind has been on the earth a long time. Over the centuries, knowledge came at a snail’s pace. I believe that the appearance of God the Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, in 1820 to Joseph Smith unlocked the heavens not only to the great spiritual knowledge revealed in this dispensation but also to secular knowledge…. President James E. Faust (Ensign, May 2000, 17)

14 President James E. Faust
“New ideas, including scientific inventions and discoveries of better ways of doing things, were being produced annually at 39 a year from 4,000 b.c. to a.d. 1, contrasted to 3,840 new ideas a year in the 19th century, while today they are created at the rate of 110,000 a year.” President James E. Faust (Ensign, May 2000, 17)

16 How have you been blessed by the fulfillment of Joel’s prophesy?
(Ie. How has modern technology blessed your life?)

17 (Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)
I maintain that had there been no restoration of the gospel, and no organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there would have been no radio; there would have been no airplane, and there would not have been the wonderful discoveries in medicine, chemistry, electricity, and the many other things wherein the world has been benefited by such discoveries. Joseph Fielding Smith (Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)

18 (Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)
Under such conditions these blessings would have been withheld, for they belong to the dispensation of the fullness of times of which the restoration of the gospel and the organization of the Church constitute the central point, from which radiates the Spirit of the Lord throughout the world. Joseph Fielding Smith (Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)

19 Q: Does this mean that inventors are inspired of God
Q: Does this mean that inventors are inspired of God? Does this mean that God “pouring out his spirit upon all flesh” means that He is giving people ideas for inventions which will help move the work along? A: In part, yes. Q: Are most inventors LDS? Are they religious people?

20 Mormon Inventors

21 One example of how this was fulfilled.
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: “And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. (Joel 2:28-32). One example of how this was fulfilled.

22 This Mormon farm boy, in 1921, was breaking up soil with his uncle's horse-drawn harrow—when the idea walloped him. He gazed at the plowed rows of dirt behind him, and a vision of a line of excited electrons danced in his head. And so, the idea for television was born. Farnsworth was only 14 years old. Philo T. Farnsworth

23 In high school he carried this idea in his head: You could transmit an image of an object from one place to another by converting the picture into electricity and shooting the stream of electrons at a fluorescent screen in a vacuum tube. To show his chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman, how it worked, Farnsworth scribbled a diagram of his idea on the school blackboard. He was 15.

24 "I am a deeply religious man, I know that God exists," said Farnsworth in a KSL interview a year before his death. "I know that I have never invented anything. I have been a medium by which these things were given to the culture as fast as culture could earn them. I give the credit to God." Philo T. Farnsworth

25 “Television is a gift from God
“Television is a gift from God. And He will hold those who utilize this instrument accountable to Him.” Philo T. Farnsworth (LDS inventor of TV) TV is not the enemy. Satan is!

26 Philo T. Farnsworth’s son, Kent, summed up how his father felt about how the TV is being used.
He would say to his children, in essence, "There’s nothing on it worthwhile, and we’re not going to watch it in this household, and I don’t want it in your intellectual diet."

27 Jonah

28 Who is Jonah? What does “Jonah” mean? “Dove.” When did Jonah prophecy?
He prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II, approximately 788 B.C. Interesting Fact Jonah’s book is not written by Jonah but another writer some time after Jonah’s mission is complete.

29

30 Jonah 1:3

31 Jonah 1:3 No Tarshish will ever be better than the Nineveh the Lord calls you to.

32 Why is Jonah running? Jonah’s mission was a mission of mercy to a Gentile people whom he (and most Israelites) believed were unfit for God’s mercy. He didn’t believe the Ninevite heathens deserved God’s mercy (see Jonah 4:1-3).

33 Jonah 1:4-15

34

35 Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away.
Didn’t go to Nineveh, instead he went astray. A Storm began to rock his boat going to Tarshish, Overboard they threw him and God said to a fish: “Swallow the prophet!” “Swallow the prophet! He went astray.”

36

37 Every missionary gets swallowed up in something!
Alma 27:17  “Now the joy of Ammon was so great even that he was full; yea, he was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell again to the earth.” Every missionary gets swallowed up in something!

39 When you run from the Lord you eventually end up in …
Jonah 2:2

42 Jonah 4:1-2

43 (BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009)
Jeffrey R. Holland Quorum of the Twelve (BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009) This message is perfect for all of the Jonah’s in the world and for the Jonah in each of us.

44 (BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009)
“Let people repent. Let people grow. Believe that people can change and improve. “Is that faith? Yes! Is that hope? Yes! Is it charity? Yes! Above all, it is charity, the pure love of Christ.” Jeffrey R. Holland Quorum of the Twelve (BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009) This message is perfect for all of the Jonah’s in the world and for the Jonah in each of us.

45 Amos

46 Who is Amos? What does “Amos” mean? “Burden.” When did Amos prophecy?
He was contemporary with Jonah & Isaiah. He prophesied during the reign of king Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel, approximately B.C. Interesting Fact Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa, 12 miles south of Jerusalem.

47 Who is Amos? Amos 1:1 Amos 7:14-15

48 Text

49 What verse comes to mind that you already know from Amos?
Cross Reference: 2 Nephi 25:9

50 Amos 3:4, 7-8 Who is the Lion? Amos 1:2

51 messages are not popular.
Sometimes prophets’ messages are not popular. As a result… Amos 2:11-12; 5:10

52 For example… Popular or not? Amos 7:10-17

53 Israelite women are like…
Amos 4:1 Israelite women are like… Popular or not? Bashan was an area with very rich in vegetation. Thus, the cows of Bashan fared quite sumptuously from day to day. What better analogy for the wealthy indulgent women of Israel who care only for themselves?

54 What will happen to them?
Amos 4:2-3 What will happen to them? The Assyrians were known for putting hooks through the lips, noses, or cheeks of their enemies and linking them to one another with a chain. Linking captives made them easy to guard and “herd” away to captivity.

55 How has the Lord tried to warn Israel?
Amos 4:6-11 (Cf. Helaman 12:3) So now what? Amos 4:12; 5:27; 6:14; 8:1-2

56 Amos’ Prophecy of Hope Amos 9:8-15

57 Hosea

58 Who is Hosea? What does Hosea mean?
“Help; deliverance; and salvation.” This name is derived from the same root as Joshua and Jesus. When did Hosea prophesy? From approximately 755 B.C. to 725 B.C. He was contemporary with Amos, Isaiah, and Micah. To whom did Hosea prophesy? His main audience was Israel, the Northern Kingdom, his native land.

59 The Greatest Love Story Ever Told
Hosea The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

60 The Strangest Commandment?
Hosea 1:2-3 Brethren, what would be your concern if the Lord commanded you to marry a harlot?

61 Brethren, what would be your concern if the Lord commanded you to marry a harlot?

62 Gomer?

63 Hosea 2:5 What Kind of a Wife Was Gomer? What would it have been like
to be Hosea in this situation?

64 Hosea 2:7 If Gomer wanted to come back, do you think Hosea should take her back? Could he ever trust her again?

65 Is this really about a prophet who actually married a harlot?
Hosea 2:12-13 Is this really about a prophet who actually married a harlot?

66 Hosea = Jesus (Faithful Spouse) Gomer = Israel (Unfaithful Spouse)

67 Gomer Israel (10 Tribes) Judah Capital: Samaria Chief Tribe: Ephraim
Capital: Jerusalem Chief Tribe: Judah

68 The Marriage Analogy Isaiah 54:5. “For thy Maker is thine husband.” Jeremiah 3:14. “For I am married unto you.”

69 immanent consequences?
In what ways was Israel unfaithful to the Lord? Hosea 4:1-2, 12 Hosea 5:3-5 What will be the immanent consequences? Hosea 9:17 Hosea 13:16

70 If you’ve ever done this, what are you?
Have you ever departed from the Lord? Have you ever been unfaithful to your covenants? Have you ever gone after the things of this world rather than stay true to your God? If you’ve ever done this, what are you?

71 You Are a Gomer

72 If Israel wants to come back to the Lord, do you think He will have them back? Can He ever trust them again?

73 What does Christ do, in the long run, after Israel (and we) have been unfaithful to Him?
Hosea 2:14-16, 19-20, 23

74 How Merciful is the Lord?
Hosea 13:9 Hosea 14:4 Mosiah 26:30 (p. 198, B of M)

75 “This was not a story about a business deal between partners…
“This was not a story about a business deal between partners…. This was a love story. This was a story of a marriage covenant bound by love, by steadfast love. What I felt then, and it has increased over the years, was that the Lord, with whom I am blessed to have made covenants, loves me, and you … with a steadfastness about which I continually marvel and which I want with all my heart to emulate.” Henry B. Eyring Quorum of the Twelve (CES Symposium, 1995)

76 Concluding Thoughts

77 The Message of the Books
Book of Jonah: God is a God of second chances. His love is not confined to a single nation. The Message of the Books of Joel, Amos, & Hosea: God punishes sin and rewards righteousness. Israel will be scattered for her wickedness for a season, but will, in the latter-days, be gathered again through the mercy of the Lord.

78 God is merciful.
