1 1 Samuel 10 Old Testament Bible Studies Prophetess Delisa Lindsey
True Love Church of Refuge November 18, 2009

2 1 Samuel 10:1-6 Samuel executes the office of prophet and took a vial of oil and poured it over (anointed) Saul’s head. Heretofore, only objects and holy priests were anointed. Now God shifts His attention to this secular leader of Israel and anoints Him for duty. The Holy Spirit was equipping him for his ministry as king over Israel. Samuel kissed Saul to indicate his personal devotion and affection for him as king. Samuel tells Saul that he is doing this because the Lord has anointed you king over Israel (captain over My inheritance). To authenticate his anointing for service, Samuel gave Saul three prophetic signs that his office was validated by God. 1- visit tomb of Rachel 2-three men & their offerings 3-the company of the prophets at the Bethel (house of God).

3 What is the significance of ‘Anointing Oil’?
To anoint means to rub or sprinkle on or to apply an oily liquid to. The anointing represents the Holy Spirit’s equipping ability to carry out the service requested. The anointing oil was symbolic for the inward (unseen) spiritual strength. The anointing oil, itself, once sanctified, could not be used for any other purpose. It was to be distinguished and set aside for holy usage. In NT, the anointing oil represents you have been filled with and/or blessed by the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

4 Saul’s Anointing Was Done Secretly…Why?
A true anointing is done in private, not openly or flashy. Apostle Paul was anointed on a dirt road. David was pulled off the job and anointed as king. Gideon was anointed in a bath tub. Jeremiah and John the Baptist were anointed in the womb. Saul’s head was drenched in oil, it was poured, not dabbed as we do. Representative of the fact that an anointing was messy, it runs down the head, down the beard and catches in the hem of the garment. You receive your true anointing in private, in your prayer closet. God will manifest it openly for others to see. A truly anointed person does not announce themselves as such, they don’t have to. God has the megaphone, He will make the announcement on your behalf as He reveals Himself in the services you perform on His behalf.

5 Prophetic Sign or Validation #1
“When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. And now your father has ceased caring about the donkeys and is worrying about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?” The first place Saul was to confirm his office was at the tomb of Rachel – Saul’s ancestral grandmother, the mother of his ancestral father, Benjamin. The crown of Jacob laid in the dust, Rachel, but through her, the crown of Jacob would be resurrected through one of her sons. The symbolic interpretation is that the Lord’s anointing of Saul would raise the crown of Rachel in the valley of the shadow of her death. Saul would meet messengers there to inform him that his donkeys of purpose were found and his father was worrying about him. God allowed Saul to lose his donkeys that he might find his destiny.

6 Prophetic Sign or Validation #2
When you get to the (plain) of Tabor, you will see three men coming toward you who are on their way to worship God at Bethel. One will be bringing three young goats, another will have three loaves of bread, and the third will be carrying a skin of wine. The (plain) terebinth or oak tree represents the mightiest tree, symbolizing strength and courage. Notice the number of threes being used, three men, three goats, and three loaves. These men were on their way to worship the Lord in Bethel and make meat (meal) and drink offerings unto the Lord. Remember, never come before the Lord empty-handed. The men were to give Saul two loaves of bread of this offering. Another indicator that God considered Saul worthy to partake of His offerings. To whom much is given, much is required. Saul has received much at the hand of the Lord, he is to remember the Lord’s charity and almsgiving to him and be just as merciful to His inheritance.

7 Prophetic Sign or Validation # 3
Afterwards, Saul will meet a company of prophets on their way to the hill or high place of God, which is near a Philistine encampment, with musical instruments, praising and magnifying God. They will be prophesying. The Glory of God will surround you and spirit of prophecy will overtake you and you will also prophesy Saul. You will experience a transformation in your spirit and become a new creature. He was turned into another man. Although he was anointed to do the work of king, he had not yet been filled with the anointing to do the work. Such as we are in our service. We receive our anointing privately, but God will manifest it openly upon his timing. When Jesus breathed {anointed them with His breath (ruach) (spirit)} on the disciples, they were filled with the Holy Spirit 50 days on Pentecost. He knew the process for their anointing was incomplete. Tarry here, wait for the power to manifest.

8 #3 Cont’d. Gibeah (hill of God) belonged to the country of Benjamin. There was a school of the prophets located there. There was also an enemy encampment there. The Gibeah company of prophets were strategically placed there to keep the enemy bound to his own territory. The prophets made so much noise praising and blessing God that the Philistines dared to cross over into Gibeah to attack Benjamin, the smallest tribe! The only deterrent to the Philistines attacking Benjamin, was the presence of the prophets! The Philistines were so accustomed to hearing the prophets banging and singing, that they were content to abide where they were. Because of the prophets in praise, the enemy was at peace. The prophets were prophesying. It does not mean that they were sharing dreams and visions, nor that they were predicting future events. They were speaking under Divine influence. Whether they were encouraging someone, giving instruction, correction, rebuke, warning, etc. they were speaking as the Spirit gave them the words to say. 1 Cor. 14:3, they were edifying, exhorting, and comforting. They were also speaking to God through His Spirit. They made decrees, calling things and situations into existence.

9 What was Samuel’s School (College) of Prophets?
These were people dedicated and devoted to studying the Word of God, prayed incessantly, preached the Word, praised the Lord regularly, not weekly, and worshiped the Lord in song (psalm). They were often young, ate together, lived together, and were supported by neighboring Israelites (community). Samuel founded these colleges, provided its instruction, oversaw its functions, trained them in praise and worship, and released its prophets. After Samuel’s death, Elijah became the chancellor or overseer, and after Elijah, then Elisha.

10 1 Samuel 10:7-8 God arranged for each of the three signs to confirm Saul’s mandate. God then releases Saul to do whatever he finds his hands to do. We should never proceed to do a work for the Lord without His spirit nor His bidding. Samuel tells Saul go on ahead of wait for him in Gilgal (wheel or rolling) to come and make sacrifices unto God. Even though God anointed Saul as king over Israel, he had not displaced Samuel as prophet and priest. Saul needed to understand that his secular authority over Israel was no comparison to Samuel’s spiritual authority over Israel. Saul was to submit to Samuel. God’s anointed always has more authority than God appointed (many are called, but few are chosen). Oh, king, wait for the prophet’s instructions. He will tell you what you must do.

11 1 Samuel 10:9-11 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart, all the signs he received were brought to pass. God gave Saul a spirit of love, power, and a sound mind. He has a new charge now, a new agenda. The former things, thoughts, or motives had been done away with. God renewed his passion and placed within him the wisdom and skill to lead His people. Saul left home caring for a few donkeys. He would return home caring for an entire nation. When he came to Gibeah (hill), Saul met the company of prophets and the spirit of prophecy descended upon him whereas he began to prophesy. When his former friends saw him prophesying among the prophets, they marveled. What has happened to Kish’s son? Is he a prophet now?

12 What is the irony in Saul’s Public Prophesying?
The school of the prophet was near his house, yet he had never had any contact with them. Did he despise them? Could this be why his friends were so astonished to see him acting like them? His successor and namesake, Saul, was making light of the New Testament church and to everyone’s astonishment, became the Gentile churches’ greatest ally and apostle. Saul was not a religious person and now he is preaching in the streets. He didn’t even know who Samuel was. That compares to a person who despises politics and has no idea who the political candidates are. Saul needed confidence in himself as a public speaker and the people would need confidence in him in that he was a man that God could trust.

13 1 Samuel 10:12-16 “Who is their father?”
Is God not the source of all inspiration? Are His gifts limited? Whenever they found a bad person becoming good, they will use the proverb, is Saul among the prophets? He made an end of prophesying. He was not a prophet, although he exercised the gift. All prophets prophesy, but not all who prophesy are prophets. He went up to the high place to give thanks to God. Saul’s uncle asked him where did he go. (Why is your hair so oily?) Saul responded that he went to go looking for the donkeys and when they could not find them, he sought after Samuel. Once Samuel’s name is mentioned and Saul’s uncle considers all Saul had just performed, he asks him what Samuel told him. Saul refrained from sharing with his uncle that the Lord gave him a kingdom. Sometimes you just can’t share your dreams and visions with family. It wasn’t time, consider Joseph.

14 1 Samuel 10:17-18 Samuel gathers the people at Mizpeh. This is the same place where through Samuel’s intercession, the Philistines were defeated (the Lord’s thunder). Samuel gives them a brief history lesson on how the Lord had delivered them out of bondage, out of the hand of the Egyptians. God lets them know that, “I am your salvation. I am the one who has delivered you from every kingdom which has oppressed you.” The Lord lets them know that just because you have rejected Me, does not disqualify Me from being your King. You chose to reject Me based on the hardness of your own heart, not based on My lack of Sovereignty. Why would you bite the hand that feeds you? Your decision is senseless and lacks merit. I have delivered you out of all of your tribulations by My power and you have rejected Me?

15 1 Samuel 10:19-24 Samuel calls all the tribes together to choose their king by lot (chance). Although Samuel already privately anointed Saul, God chose this method openly to erase any doubts or concerns about the new king. When all the tribes presented themselves, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. When Benjamin came near, the Matri family was chosen, then Saul, the son of Kish was chosen, but he disappeared. The people inquired of the Lord, “Where was he?” The Lord replied that he was hiding among the baggage. They found Saul and brought him before the people. As he stood, they could not help but notice he was standing head and shoulders taller than everyone else. Samuel presented him before the people as the man God chose to be their king. The people graciously accepted him and chanted, “long live the king!”

16 Why was Saul hiding? Did he battle feelings of unworthiness and low self esteem? Was he afraid of the responsibility? After all he could not care for donkeys, how much more an entire nation? Did he fear jealous friends and family? Was he trying to be humble and did not want to appear to be too eager?

17 1 Samuel 10:25-27 Acting like the true spiritual leader that he was, Samuel explains to the people and to the new king what his responsibilities were (behavior of royalty, the rights and duties of a king, or regulations of kingship). The priests had their laws, the people had their commandments, now the king would receive his instructions as well. He wrote the instructions on a scroll and placed it before the Lord to care for its oversight. Afterwards, Samuel sent the people home. Saul also returned to his home in Gibeah with a following of men whose hearts had been touched by God to be valiant and ready to serve the king in his new service. Notwithstanding, there were haters in the midst, troublemakers, dirty, rotten scoundrels who sized Saul up and considered him useless and unfit. They offered him no presents but Saul held his peace in the matter.

18 How shall this man save us?
Children of Belial = wicked, vain, worthless, good for nothing, ungodly, evil, unprofitable, ruined, and destroyed. Saul held his peace – charash = to be silent, dumb, deaf, and speechless. Jesus + persecution = deaf and dumb. He opened not his mouth. There is no need to respond to a devil. Don’t entertain his comments, allow them to fall on deaf ears. There need not always be a response. Saul knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that God chose him to be king. Why should he entertain those who disagreed with a decision that God made? Why should you? Whom God justifies, He qualifies.
