2 Key Truth Answers Lesson Five
Sin entered the world when SATAN tempted Adam and Eve and they disobeyed God. Because of sin we're born sinful (ORIGINAL sin), we commit sins every day (ACTUAL sin), we deserve God's PUNISHMENT and we should suffer and die. God said sin must be PUNISHED, but a Savior would take the PUNISHMENT for us. God said we must be HOLY, but a Savior would be HOLY for us. We call this “God's Great EXCHANGE.”

3 Opening Prayer Dear Jesus, no one else could do what you did for me. And it had to be done. Help me to appreciate who you are and what you do. Even though I know what you've done for me, I sometimes live like it really doesn't matter. Forgive me for that. It does matter. Because you came to earth and became a human being who could live and die in my place, now I know that I never have to die and my life is really worth something. You bought and paid for me...and you don't buy junk! Be with us as we study your word. Amen.

4 Batter Up! Introduction – Suppose your school’s baseball team is playing for the state championship. It’s the last half of the last inning. The bases are loaded. There are two outs. Your team is down by three runs, and your team’s poorest hitter is up. Your team’s best hitter is on the bench because he had a bad ankle and can’t play shortstop as he usually does. But he has his uniform on so he can pinch-hit if he is needed. What will your coach most likely do? Why? (He will substitute the pinch hitter because it will give the whole team a better chance to win the championship.) In what ways is the substitute hitter just like the player he pinch-hits for, and in what ways is he different? (He belongs to the same team, and he is about the same age. But he is a better hitter.)

5 GOD SENT HIS SON TO SAVE MANKIND
LESSON 6 GOD SENT HIS SON TO SAVE MANKIND In a similar way, we have a “pinch hitter” who stepped in and won salvation for all of us. We could never win salvation for ourselves, so Jesus became our substitute and did that for us. In our next lessons, we are going to look more closely at Jesus in order to learn what he did as our pinch hitter. But first we want to see what the Bible tells us about Jesus himself.

Who Is Jesus Christ? Jesus’ Person True Man True God Combined in one person by the virgin birth so he could Just walk through the diagram from top to bottom. As you do so note that if Jesus was just a man, at best he would have lived and died. But since he was also true God he is our only Savior. be under law keep law perfectly die die for all SAVIOR

33 Jesus - True God / True Man in One Person
Illustration: In the early centuries of the church, a false teacher named Arius arose who claimed that Jesus wasn’t truly God. Arius confused many people . When they read the Bible, they saw passages that seemed to teach that Jesus was an ordinary man. But they also read other passages that seemed to teach that Jesus was eternal, almighty God. In their confusion they turned to Pastor Augustine for help, asking, “Could Jesus be both God and man?” Pastor Augustine helped them understand who Jesus was with an illustration. He noted that when you put a piece of iron into a fire, it heats up until it glows red hot. The iron remains iron and the fire remains fire. But the two have become one. Augustine explained that it works the same way with our Lord. Just as the iron is still iron and the fire is still fire even though they are joined together. Jesus is still a man and He is still God even though God and man have come together in Him. For our salvation, God and man joined together in one person of Jesus Christ.

34 Application Questions
Evaluate. One way some people explain Jesus’ divine and human nature is to say that like an actor who plays two parts in the same movie, Jesus acted like God on some occasions and like man on other occasions. This diminishes the fact that he was true man and true God. He didn’t just play the part. [Click to next slide]

35 Application Questions
Agree or disagree? The truth that Jesus is both true God and true man is a miracle which we really can’t understand. Agree – while we can begin to explain and illustrate it. It ultimately is just a miracle that is beyond our human reason and understanding. Note this truth does help us understand some things that Jesus says in the gospels. (I.e. "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Mt 24:36) As true man Jesus really did not know when the end of the world would come. [Click to next slide]

36 Application Questions
Agree or Disagree? If Jesus had not been true God and true man in one person he could not have saved us. Agree – If he was just a man then he would not have been perfect and he could only have died for himself. If he was just God he could not have lived under the law and he could not have died. [Click to next slide]

37 OUR SAVIOR’S NAME [Click to next slide]

38 Matthew 1:21 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." [Have your youth read the passage] Question: This passage helps us understand what the name Jesus means. According to this passage, what would he do for his people. Answer: He would save them from their sins. This is what the name Jesus means – “The Lord saves” [Click to next slide]

39 OUR SAVIOR’S NAME JESUS: Savior (Deliverer) [Click to next slide]

40 Matthew 1:23 23"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel“ --which means, "God with us." [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage, what is another name which Jesus would be given? Answer: Immanuel. Question: What does the name Immanuel mean? Answer: It means “God with us.” [Click to next slide]

41 OUR SAVIOR’S NAME JESUS: Savior (Deliverer) IMMANUEL: God with us
[Click to next slide]

42 Exodus 3:14 14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " [Have your youth read the passage] Question: In the Old Testament, God revealed his name to Moses. According to this passage, what was that name? Answer: The name was “I AM.” When written in Hebrew this name should be pronounced Yaweh. “Jehovah” is a spelling that developed from combining the consonants of the name with the vowels of a word for “Lord” (Adonai). In the New Testament Jesus was also called LORD. [Click to next slide]

43 OUR SAVIOR’S NAME JESUS: Savior (Deliverer) IMMANUEL: God with us
[Click to next slide] LORD (Jehovah): Name for God meaning “I Am”

44 John 1:41 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage, whom did Andrew tell Simon he had found? Answer: He said that he had found the Messiah or the Christ. [Click to next slide]

45 OUR SAVIOR’S NAME JESUS: Savior (Deliverer) IMMANUEL: God with us
[Have your youth record the answer] [Click to next slide] LORD (Jehovah): Name for God meaning “I Am” CHRIST: Anointed One (Greek) MESSIAH: Anointed One (Hebrew)

46 Application Questions
Many people who call themselves Christians deny that Jesus was born of a virgin. Go back through our lesson for today, and think about the part Jesus’ virgin birth plays in God’s plan to save us from sin. Then answer this question: Is the doctrine of the virgin birth an important truth to believe? Why or why not? God tells us that Jesus’ birth by the virgin Mary was the way he became true God and true man in one person. If we don’t believe God when he tells us this, then we have to believe (a) that in some unknown way, Jesus became the God-man; or (b) that Jesus isn’t really true God and true man together in one person. Either option is a hopeless one. The first (a) means that we have to make up our own ideas of how Jesus became both. The second (b) means that we don’t believe that our lesson is true.

47 Application Questions
Agree or disagree: God died. We could say that and be understood correctly if our listeners knew that we were referring to Jesus. But it would be more accurate, and it would avoid any possible misunderstanding, if we would say, instead, “Jesus the God-man died.”

48 Application Questions
Luther once said that the devil would really be able to put a lot of doubt about salvation in our minds when we are close to dying if he could come to us and say “Jesus can’t be your Savior because he is only a man!” or “Jesus can’t be your Savior because he is only God!” How would Satan be able to put a lot of doubt about our salvation in our minds if he could say either of those things to us when we are near death? If Jesus had been only a man, then he could not have kept God’s law perfectly for us nor could his death have paid for the sins of the world. If Jesus were only God, then he wouldn’t have been subject to God’s law, he couldn’t have been the substitute for humans in keeping God’s law, and he couldn’t have died as the payment of our sins.

49 A secretary in the office of a small company has a lot of different jobs. She types letters, answers the phone, orders supplies, and checks inventory. She’s even responsible for taking care of some of the financial records. She has to do all these jobs because the company is rather small and can’t afford to hire a number of people to do them. Jesus also has a number of different “jobs” to do as our Savior. He does all these jobs – not because God couldn’t afford to hire a number of people to do them – but because he is the only one who is able to do them. In this part of our lesson we want to find out: What three offices (jobs) did Jesus perform while he was here on earth?

50 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE

51 Acts 10:38 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: Anointing someone’s head with oil was a way that a person was specially designated to do a specific job. In the Old Testament, the prophets, kings and priests were often designated this way. This happened in a very unique way to Jesus at his baptism. According to this passage, with what was Jesus anointed? Answer: He was anointed with the Holy Spirit. [Click to next slide]

52 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE As the Christ, or Messiah (Anointed One), He was anointed with the Holy Spirit to serve as our High Priest [Have your youth record the answer] [Click to next slide] Prophet King

53 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 1. As our High Priest, Jesus
Now let’s take a look at how Jesus carried out his office as a high priest. [Click to next slide]

54 Hebrews 7:25-27 25Therefore he is able to save completely[1] those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. 26Such a high priest meets our need--one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: In the Old Testament the High Priest performed an important job by offering sacrifices for sins. He did this day after day for his own sins and the sins of others. According to verse 27, how did Jesus do the job of a priest? Answer: He sacrificed for their sins. Question: However, the passage also describes an important difference. While the Old Testament priests offered animals as sacrifices, what did Jesus offer as a sacrifice? Answer: He offered himself as the sacrifice. [Click to next slide]

55 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 1. As our High Priest, Jesus
- sacrificed Himself for our sins, once for all [Have your youth record the answer] [Click to next slide]

56 Hebrews 7:25 25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he [Jesus] always lives to intercede for them. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: Another important duty the Old Testament priests performed was praying to God on behalf of the people of Israel. According to this passage, what does Jesus live to do for believers? Answer: He lives to intercede for them. Another word for this is a mediator. A mediator is a person who acts as a “go between.” In fact 1 John 2:1 describes this work of a mediator well [Click to next slide]

57 1 John 2:1 If anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. [Have your youth read the passage] [Click to the next slide]

58 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 1. As our High Priest, Jesus
- sacrificed Himself for our sins, once for all - intercedes for (prays for) us [Have your youth record the answer] [Click to next slide]

59 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 2. As our Prophet, Jesus [Click to next slide]

60 Hebrews 1:1-2 1In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: An important duty which the Old Testament prophets performed was to be spokesmen for God. In the last days of the New Testament, God chose to speak through someone else. According to verse 2 who was that? Answer: God chose to speak through his Son – Jesus. [Click to next slide]

61 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 2. As our Prophet, Jesus
- preached God’s Word in public while on earth [[Have your youth fill in the answer] [Click to next slide]

62 Luke 10:16 16"He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." [Have your youth read the passage] In this passage Jesus was speaking to his disciples. When the disciples spoke Jesus’ words it was as if Jesus was speaking through them. Therefore anytime God’s Word is shared, Jesus is speaking. [Click to next slide]

63 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 2. As our Prophet, Jesus
- preached God’s Word in public while on earth - preaches God’s Word today through the Bible and other believers [Click to next slide]

64 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 3. As our King, Jesus [Click to next slide]

65 Luke 17:2; 1 Colossians 3:15 The kingdom of God is within you.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. [Have your youth read the passages] Question: According to these passages, where does Jesus rule as a king? Answer: He rules in our hearts. Jesus brings peace to human hearts as the Holy Spirit works through the Gospel. The good news of forgiveness reminds people about the greatest peace on earth – peace between God and man!

66 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 3. As our King, Jesus
- rules in our hearts and lives with His Word and Spirit [Click to next slide]

67 Ephesians 1:20-23 20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: Jesus rule is not limited to believers’ hearts. When Jesus completed his work on earth, God gave him a position of authority. According to verse 22, what has Jesus been appointed as a head. Answer: He has been appointed as a head over everything. Question: According to verse 22, for whose benefit does he rule all things. Answer: He rules all things for the benefit of his church. [Click to next slide]

68 OUR SAVIOR’S OFFICE 3. As our King, Jesus
- rules in our hearts and lives with His Word and Spirit - rules the whole universe for our good [Have your youth record the answer] [Click to next slide]

69 Application Questions
Agree or Disagree? Every time we read about an Old Testament prophet, priest, or king, we can think about Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Agree. They accounts about Old Testament prophets, priests, and kings are included in the Bible to tell us how God in his love carried out his plan of salvation down through the many years of the Old Testament. But for us to think about Jesus each time we read about an Old Testament prophet, priest or king would also be proper because each of them was in one sense a picture of what the Messiah to come would do for all people.
