1 Project 1 (CGNB 413) Briefing
By: COIT Undergraduate Project Committee Dr. Asmidar Abu Bakar (Coordinator Project 1) Azimah Abdul Ghapar Sera Syarmila Sameon Surizal Nazeri Dr. Wahidah Hashim

2 Why do you need to do project?
Apply knowledge that has been learned in class. Gain experience in developing a system. Learn something new. To create a sample of your work. Requirement to get a degree.

3 Project 1 Activities Select and rank the project areas
Check who is your supervisor Discuss a topic with your supervisor Submit your initial report Keep a logbook Set a meeting with supervisor every week Discuss with examiner at least once Write the draft report Perform presentation Write the final report

4 Project 1 vs. Project 2 The actual scope for project 1 and project 2 depends on the methodology used. Example 1: Waterfall Model Project 1: Literature review, user requirements, system design. Project 2: Implementation, testing. Example 2: Prototyping Model Project 1: Literature review, system design (maybe partially), prototype 1, prototype testing. Project 2: More design, prototype 2 (or more), final product, testing. Discuss expected deliverables (for both Project 1 and 2) with your supervisor.

5 Logbook Each student is required to keep a logbook (can be obtained from All your progress must be written in the logbook. Bring the logbook during your meeting with supervisor. Supervisor need to read and sign your logbook. At the end of the semester, if there are less than SIX signatures, your supervisor has the right to give you an E.

6 Project Examiner Each project will be assigned an examiner.
An examiner is another lecturer who will evaluate your project together with your supervisor. Examiners will choose the projects that he/she wants to examine. You have no control over who your examiner will be. It is COMPULSORY for you to discuss your project with your examiner at least once during the semester. Many students don’t do this. It may cause problem later on.

7 Project 1 Evaluation Marks will be given by your project supervisor and your examiner. Marks allocation: ASSESSMENT CRITERIA PERCENTAGE DEADLINE Initial Report 10% 26 November 14 Progress Report 1 30% 17 December 14 Progress Report 2 presentation, report and logbook 60% 30 January 15

8 INITIAL REPORT A small write up (around 2 to 3 page) that contain the plan for the whole project. Should be agreed upon by both student and supervisor. Contents: Project title Brief description Objectives and scopes Expected outcome Gantt Chart

9 Progress report 1 A write up that contain at least two chapters from the whole report. Supervisor will check and give marks.

10 Presentation Will be done in supervisor’s room and evaluated by supervisor and examiner. Duration around 30 minutes. Recommendation and suggestions should be taken seriously. Modify report if necessary.

11 Final Report Read the COIT’s final year project guidelines to learn about the format. Should roughly follow our suggested report contents. Make sure grammar is correct. Write with intention that somebody else who read the report will be able to understand what are you supposed to do for the project. Make sure all contents cited from other sources are referenced properly.

12 Project Guidelines for Systems and Networking
There are two guidelines that you need to obtain. COIT Project Guidelines for Systems and Networking Report Writing Guidelines Both documents can be obtained from

13 Facilities Money allocation
Each of you are allocated RM for buying equipments. Procedures: Get form from lab technician. Fill in the required information. Get your supervisor to verify. Bring back the form to lab technician. The technician will buy the items for you.

14 Facilities You CANNOT buy:
Pirated software Books Software that is already available in the lab. Remember that whatever you buy, they belong to the college. Make sure you return them to the lab by the end of your project. Failure to do so may cause your grade to be suspended.

15 Facilities Final year project lab
There is a computer lab dedicated for final year project students. BW-4-R06. You can use the lab for: Research (browsing the Web, etc). Development. If you need to install any specific software, please contact the lab technicians.

16 FAQs I cannot finish my project 1 in this semester. Can I extend? NO.. Definitely NO unless you have a health problem (e.g. MC for 2 months Can I change my project in the middle of project 1? Yes, with the permission of the supervisor.

17 FAQs What if I don’t like my examiner?
Live with it… What if my supervisor becomes unavailable? If it can be planned (i.e. maternity leave), please make arrangement beforehand. If it cannot be planned (i.e. death, hospitalization, lecturer got fired), please see the project coordinator.

18 Common Problems Fail to follow the deadline.
Poor attendance for meeting with supervisor. Fail to meet the examiner at least once earlier during the project. Plagiarism / cheating.

19 Example : project title under system and network implementation
Development of a Small-scale SDN-based Network using OpenFlow Development of IPv6 Intranet inside Uniten Network Development of Linux Distribution for Uniten Development of MANET Testbed using Embedded Boards IPv6 Testbed Implementation using Linux-based Routers

20 Example : research base
Study and implementation of authentication method for mobile ad-hoc network Formulation of trust model for cloud network Study on Cloud architecture for security and privacy of data Study and implementation of cryptographic algorithm for constraint device.

21 Example : embedded system
robotic application radio frequency identification system (RFID) monitoring unit home appliance control, automation device

22 Example : Mobile Application
location-based services order-tracking ticket purchases mobile medical environmental awareness safety alert

23 Example : Computer & Network Application
For standalone applications applications involve the implementation of a special algorithm or technique such as the implementation of security or artificial intelligence techniques. For network applications, the applications must involve the implementation of a network protocol
