2. The Power of Language
Language allows us to get distance on ourselves so we can enjoy our selves and others. It helps us take a step back from the intensity of life to laugh. Language presents us with almost endless possibilities for humor. Almost every situation has the potential for humor. Thanks to language!

A: Because it was too big. ("Tubig" is "water" in Tagalog.)

5. At 1:00 PM, I took some ice cream out of the freezer, but then I forgot about it. That was one hour ago, and I just realized that it's 2 now. ("Tunaw" is "melted" in Tagalog.)

A: Hindi ("Hindi" is Tagalog for "No". Hindi is also a language in India.)

A: Because it would be a sin. ("Asin" is "salt" in Tagalog.)

8. Alphabet/Word Exercise
Without using your books or notes, brainstorm a list of at least 15 terms associated with the Tagalog language and the Philippines.
Use 3-4 words from your list to write a Limerick. Basic Limerick form has 5 lines. The 1st and 2nd lines rhyme as well as 3rd and 4th lines. The 5th line rhymes with the first 2.

10. Not only language give us distance from ourselves, but language can be used to analyze itself. Often, when we are talking with another person and do not understand them, we will say, “did you mean x or y?” In so doing, we are asking them to reflect on their prior use of certain words or phrase and to be more precise. This process also includes linguistic inference- when we understand what another person is intending to communicate by how they say something as well as by what they actually say.

13. Small Group Activity: Read the poem in the following ways.
As if it were a script in a comedy club
As if the reader just had a fight with someone he/she loves
As if the reader were speaking to an infant
As it the reader were speaking as Hamlet
As if the reader were totally bored
Discuss: what happened to the poem? What did you notice about the activity?
Substitute the word “pakpak” with a different word and see what it does to the poem.

14. Rationale of the Course
This is an intensive 5 credit course offered on a 50 minute daily class.
Students are expected to exemplify autonomous learning outside of the classroom to keep up with the fast-paced classroom learning.
Students in this class are expected to have read the grammatical structures, thematic lessons, and vocabulary words before each class period.

15. Student Profile
Understand short, learned utterances, particularly where context strongly supports understanding and speech is clearly audible.
Comprehend some words and phrases from simple questions, statements, high-frequency commands and courtesy formulae about topics that refer to basic personal information or the immediate physical setting.
Handle simple vocabulary, and express simple needs and basic courtesies; i.e verbally used more than two or three words and show frequent long pauses and repetition of interlocutor's words.
Read and recognize simple vocabulary
Identify an increasing number of contextualized words and/or phrases including cognates and borrowed words.

16. Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the following skills:

be familiar with the main grammar structure (e.g. verbal focus and aspect) of the language
use the appropriate grammar structure in speaking and writing

Demonstrate proficient use of the language both in oral and written discourse
Complete weekly exercises from textbooks and websites
Collaborate with other students in a group presentation
Keep a Three-Ring Binder for Lecture Notes, Vocabulary Words and for Homework. Regular Spring Notebook is unacceptable.
Keep track of language learning progress by using the accountability chart

23. Grading 662-720 = A 590-661 = B 518-589 = C 468-517 = D Below 468 = F
For Extra Points up to 30 pts., students can participate in several lectures and cultural events sponsored by the Center for Southeast Asia Studies. One lecture or cultural event is worth 10 pts.

24. Grading Requirements Attendance and Participation
Everyone is expected to attend classes on Monday to Friday and actively participate in all the activities. Students arriving later than 2:10 p.m. will be considered absent. Five (5) or more unexcused absences will automatically give you an “0” under Attendance category and will greatly affect the course grade.
Illness and death of immediate family are the only consideration for excused absences. A doctor’s note should be presented if absence is due to illness and a “Memorial Card” from the funeral in case of death.

26. A. Attendance and Participation On any day, everyone is expected to

do at least 3 hours of Language Lab work per week. If you are to use other computer facilities for the regular website ( please make a note in your accountability chart and write the pages you visited in the chart.

27. B. Homework: You are required to have a separate section with index tabs in your three-ring binder. Do not write your homework in your book. Homework is due on the day indicated in the weekly lessons plan. Hand-in worksheets and exercises to Ate Michelle or Ate Marvs during the first few minutes of class time. Homework submitted at the end of class will not be accepted. Points will not be given to students doing homework in class or in the hallway.

28. C. Small Group Presentation and Meetings
Small groups will be assigned during the second week of classes. If you have problems with your assigned small group, please see the instructor ASAP so we can make other arrangements.

29. Each group will Roleplay a Filipino Folk. Groups will do the following:
Write dialog lines based on the chosen Folk Story and submit a type written narrative (4-5 pages double spaces). The narrative should be a detailed description of the presentation and a written account of how the group prepared for the actual presentation.
Create costumes and other props
Group members should be given a role to act and lines to memorize and participate in all group meetings and preparation
Every group member should memorize all lines
Present on the scheduled date of presentation
Presentations that are not memorized will automatically be given an “F” grade under “Group Presentation”, which is 100 pts. of the total grade.

30. Meet with your group at least once a week beginning on the 3rd week of class to discuss, brainstorm, and work on your presentation.
PREPARE AND MEET WITH YOUR GROUP EARLY IN THE SEMESTER. DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF CLASSES TO DO THIS. Remember, you have to memorize your presentation.

31. NO make-up quizzes will be allowed.
D. Weekly Quizzes
Vocabulary quizzes are short quizzes based on the weekly vocabulary words and grammar discussions. You are expected to review for these quizzes on your own using the website at www2.seasite.niu.edu/tagvocab or other helpful resources (e.g. class notes, notes given at the beginning of each week). This short quiz is given every Friday.
NO make-up quizzes will be allowed.

32. E. Final Examination
The final exam will be comprehensive. It will cover all the grammar and vocabulary lessons during the semester. The exam will consist of reading, vocabulary, writing, and listening, and grammar.
The best way to review for the exam is to do all the above requirements (homework, websites activities (thematic lessons, grammar pages, and vocabulary website), listen to dialogs/and other audios, do all reading and writing exercises) during the semester.
