1 Plant & Animal Adaptations
Science 10 - Biology

2 When you think of a camel, what sort of environment do you picture it in?
Desert ??? ???

3 When you think of a camel, what sort of environment do you picture it in?
Desert

4 How do you think the camel would do if we placed it in the Canadian arctic?

5 Why do you think the camel is so much more successful in the desert than in the arctic?

6 Why do you think the camel is so much more successful in the desert than in the arctic?
The camel has special ADAPTATIONS that make it perfectly suited to its natural environment.

7 Write this down…. Adaptations: Special traits that help organisms to better survive and reproduce in a particular environment

8 There are three types of adaptations:
Structural Physiological Behavioural

9 1. Structural Adaptations
The physical features of an organism’s body whose function contributes to the survival of that organism.

10 Ex. Snowshoe Hare Can change its coat colour with the season in order to camouflage with the snow and the grass – great for avoiding predators

11 How do you think the wider hind foot contributes to its survival?

12 Allows it to move more easily over the snow. Acts like a “snow shoe”

13 2. Physiological Adaptations
A physical or chemical event that takes place inside the body of an organism that contribute to its survival

14 Ex. Cactus Photosynthesis can take place inside a cactus with smaller amounts of water then is required for other plants Great for surviving in places with little precipitation - desert

15 Ex. Ability to Hibernate
Some animals are able to lower their body temperature, slow their metabolism and their breathing rate. The purpose: to conserve energy when there is little food (usually winter). Hibernating animals: Bears, rodents, bats, some rattle snakes, and more…

16 3. Behavioural Adaptations
Things that an organism does to survive in the unique conditions of its environment. Includes how the organism feeds, mates, cares for its young, escapes predation, when it chooses to hibernate.

17 3. Behavioural Adaptations
Includes how the organism feeds, mates, cares for its young, escapes predation, when it chooses to hibernate.

19 There are three types of adaptations:
Structural – Body Part Physiological – Inside Body Behavioural - Action
