2. Why do we cut hair ? To remove damaged or split ends
To Thin and taper hair to reduce bulk
To reduce the overall length
To create new shape/style
To add texture and interest
To achieve the clients wishes
Activity- ask the students to come up with the main purpose of cutting hair

3. Health & Safety whilst cutting
In groups, make a list of all the different health and safety concerns to consider when cutting.
PPE
Sterilised tools and equipment
Hair continuously swept up
Clean work area
If you cut your client the wound must be cleaned wearing gloves
Cuts to self to be cleaned and covered with plasters
Scissors to be used and stored safely out of reach
Razor blades to go in the yellow sharps box
To work in groups of 4 and present answers to group research using handbooks

4. Consultations Skills
Good hairdressing is communication and skill. Never shampoo a client without providing a full consultation with open questions using visual aids, being aware of the clients body language, repeat instruction for clarity . The top 3 reasons why people leave their hairdressers are:- 1) They always did what they wanted to do 2) They didn’t listen to me or suggest anything new 3) They did something too drastic.
Ask students for any bad/good experiences they may have had when visiting a salon.

14. Cutting Shapes
There are 4 basic cutting shapes you will learn on your VRQ level 2 qualification. Once you have gained confidence and are competent on these shapes, you can then build on these to create a variety of different looks. 1) One length 2) Uniform layer 3) Short graduation 4) Long graduation

15. Angles
This section runs vertically ↕. Vertical sections can go from the centre front hair line to the centre back nape. Sometimes they are shorter.
This section runs horizontally ↔. Horizontal sections can go across the nape, across the crown or round the back of the head from ear to ear.
Here, the horizontal guideline runs across the head just above the ears. The vertical guideline runs from the crown to form a ‘T’.
This section runs diagonally Diagonal sections can go from left to right or from right to left . They are usually positioned to follow the shape of the head.
