Aims:
To practise and develop all four skills.
To enrich Ss vocabulary related to sports
To help Ss become acquainted with and understand poetry
To promote critical thinking
To promote creativity
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to:

PROCEDURE:
1. Teacher shows images/pictures of sportsmanship and asks students to say what the lesson is going to be about. Elicit the word “ Sportsmanship”. Ss will most probably say things like : helping others, helping opponents, respect others etc.
2. The Teacher writes “Be a good Sport” on the board and asks students to explain what it means. If they do not know what the expression means, the teacher writes it on the board.
A cheerful, helpful person who lets you enjoy yourself and never complains. (mention spoil-sport)
3. The Teacher then asks what the expression could mean when used in connection with playing sports.
A good sport is someone who knows how to lose. Ask if they know the opposite.
A sore loser/ a bad loser

4. Show extract from Olympic Creed and Olympic Oath on Video Projector. Allow Ss a few minutes to read. ( creed- a set of rules/beliefs) (Appendix A)
5. Ask class:
What do the Olympic Creed and Olympic Oath mean to you?
Do you agree?
What does being a good sport mean to you? Give examples of good sportsmanship.

The Olympic Creed
The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.
The Olympic Oath
“In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams.

6. Hand out poems by Brenda Kaye and Francis Duggan
( Appendix B) and ask students to:
comment on the qualities a good sport should have, according to the poems
b) say which qualities mentioned in the oath and creed are also mentioned or hinted at in the poems
c) Complete the “Good Sport worksheet” ( Point out that apart from the things mentioned in the poems, they have to think of three more qualities a good sport should have).

Poor Sportsmanship
There are some who say the famous
phrase “I should of won
not them. That is it. I am mad!”
Then there are those who accept
the fact and take it like a man
and walk away till the next time.
Screaming and throwing a fit because
you didn’t win is poor sportsmanship
and it makes you a very sore loser.
That shows and tells me you
are just spoilt rotten to the core
and care for no one except yourself.
Losing and disappointments
are all part of the learning
tool of life.
We have to step back and realize
or ask the question. OK. Why
didn’t I win?

Then you take those faults and
improve them and get back
in and do it all over again.
Who knows- you might just win,
And learn to have respect for
Yourself as well as others.
Always remember winning isn’t
Everything-‘tis what you have

A good sport
His best ever finish is a seventeenth place
And it’s likely now he’ll never win a race
He goes by the name of the “unplaced athlete”
But the main thing about him is that he does compete
As without his type others they could not run for gold
And stories of their greatness could not be written or told
And though for him the bonfires they never will blaze
He should be remembered and we should sing his praise
He should be remembered for trying his best
And though always found wanting when put to the test
Great courage of him we should not deny
And credit him for giving it his best try 
And credit him if only for taking part
A sportsman in ways and a sportsman at heart

And every race to him is just a run fun
He will never be one sports writers will recall

7. Teacher sets homework: Acrostic poem on being a good Sport.
T explains how to write acrostic poems. (Appendix C)
Subject: Be A Good Sport.
Brainstorms materials that relate to the subject so that students will have a word bank to work on.
T writes title vertically, one letter per line and reminds students that each line should begin with the corresponding letter.
T also tells Ss that each line should relate back to the subject. Dictionary use in class is recommended.
Give example on board:

Everyone feels great when they win. However, it can just be as hard to be a 1)_____________ sport when you have won a game as when you’ve lost one.
