7 Summary of events of the failure to enter the land
Scene 7a Land God Builds the Nation Summary of events of the failure to enter the land

8 Failure to Enter the Land Numbers 13-36
7 Failure to Enter the Land Numbers 13-36 Moses Sends Out the Spies – Num. 13:1-3 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them." So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

9 Failure to Enter the Land Numbers 13-36
7 Failure to Enter the Land Numbers 13-36 Moses’ Orders – Num. 13:17-20 Then Moses said to them, "Go up this way into the South, and go up to the mountains, and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; whether the land is rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not. Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land." So they went up and spied out the land.

10 Failure to Enter the Land
7 Failure to Enter the Land The Spies Reported On the Land – Num. 13:25-29 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days and came back to Moses and Aaron… in the Wilderness of Paran, they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan."

11 Failure to Enter the Land
7 Failure to Enter the Land Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we." And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak…); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

12 Failure to Enter the Land
7 Failure to Enter the Land The people murmured against Moses and Aaron Numbers 14:1-4 So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! Why has the Lord brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?" So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt."

13 Failure to Enter the Land
7 Failure to Enter the Land Moses and Aaron prayed and Joshua and Caleb try to persuade the people Numbers 14:5-10 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. But Joshua and Caleb who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.‘ Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them." And all the congregation said to stone them with stones.

14 Failure to Enter the Land Moses Intercedes Numbers 14:11-19
7 Failure to Enter the Land Moses Intercedes Numbers 14:11-19 Then the Lord said to Moses: "How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them? I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them..." And Moses said to the Lord: "Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them… They have heard that You, Lord, are among these people… Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, 'Because the Lord was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them… And now, I pray… Pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

15 Failure to Enter the Land
7 Failure to Enter the Land Then the Lord said: "I have pardoned, according to your word; but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord– because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it. But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.

16 Failure to Enter the Land
7 Failure to Enter the Land This generation shall not enter the land. Numbers 14 Say to them, 'As I live,' says the Lord, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above. But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised. Those very men who brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague before the Lord. But Joshua and Caleb remained alive.

17 7 If you won’t do it, God will find someone who will!
This is a summary of what God did. Compare with Psalms 106:24-27: “Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His word, but complained in their tents, and did not heed the voice of the LORD. Therefore He raised up His hand in an oath against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness, to overthrow their descendants among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.”

18 What keeps you out of the Land?
7 What keeps you out of the Land? “They were not able to enter because of unbelief.” (Heb. 3:19) “Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God.” (Heb. 3:12)

19 Concerning Israel's Opinion Of Their Situation…
7 Concerning Israel's Opinion Of Their Situation… The Opposite Was True! The Report of the 10 Spies. Numbers 13:33 There we saw the giants and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." The Testimony of Rahab. Joshua 2:9-11 Rahab said to the men: "I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan.... As soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

20 Summary of events leading to entering the land
Scene 7b Land God Builds the Nation Summary of events leading to entering the land

21 After the death of Moses the LORD spoke to Joshua saying:
7 40 Years Later After the death of Moses the LORD spoke to Joshua saying: Now therefore arise go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. (Joshua1:1-3)

22 The whole world … all nations … every ethnic.
7 God sets the Boundaries “arise, go over Jordan to the land I am giving” “From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.” Joshua 1:4 Matthew 28 The whole world … all nations … every ethnic.

23 God’s work does not depend on any one man.
7 God’s work does not depend on any one man. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses so I will be with you I will not leave you nor forsake you Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous that you may observe to do according to all the law … that you may prosper wherever you go (1:5-7).

24 Joshua sent out two men to spy secretly … especially Jericho.
7 Joshua sent out two men to spy secretly … especially Jericho. So they came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there … and it was told the king of Jericho … but she hid them up on the roof with the stalks of flax … she said to them: I know that the LORD has given you the land … for we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea … and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites … for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath (2:1-11).

25 7 Hebrews 11:31 “By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.” James 2:25 “You see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”

26 God Works Upstream Joshua 3:10-11, 16
7 God Works Upstream Joshua 3:10-11, 16 “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and He will without fail drive out from before you the nations … Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan … the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam.”

27 God Is Working Joshua 5 So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, that their heart melted; and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the children of Israel.

28 Once in the Land 7 Who went first? The priests carrying the ark.
God performed a miracle to get them out (Red Sea) and a miracle to get them in (Jordan River). Although the Lord is revealed as Captain of the Lord’s host and the symbol is now the sword, the strategy in holy warfare for soldiers of the Lord is not to build a fortress, but an altar…a fortress of worship and prayer. Two things were necessary before engaging the enemy: (1) Purification by circumcision (2) The Passover

29 7 The Captain of the Lord of Hosts led them against “securely shut up” Jericho “And the LORD said to Joshua: See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.” (6:2) “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city! The city shall be doomed to destruction, only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the spies we sent.” (6:17)

30 7 The Captain of the Lord of Hosts led them against “securely shut up” Jericho So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

31 A Scarlet Thread of Redemption
7 A Scarlet Thread of Redemption Rahab tied the cord of scarlet thread in her window, risking all her life upon it. The scarlet cord in the window protected her and her family from destruction, as in Exodus 12:13 “when I see the blood I will pass over.”

32 The Second Battle was lost -Chapter 7
“But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, … of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the LORD burned against the children of Israel … neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you …

33 Achan’s Confession of Sin 7:20-21
“I saw … I coveted … I took … I hid …”

34 The conquest of the Land took 7 Years.
The book of Joshua gives us the events of the conquering of the Promise Land

35 Division of the Land Joshua 13-21
7 Division of the Land Joshua 13-21 East Canaan: (east of Jordan) Half tribe of Manasseh, Reuben and Gad Joshua 13 West Canaan: The rest of the tribes of Israel Joshua 14-21 What God said He would do, He did Joshua 21:43-45

36 7 Joshua 21:43-45 “So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. And the Lord gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and not one of all their enemies stood before them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hand. Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.”

37 Farewell Address of Joshua
7 Farewell Address of Joshua Joshua Prepares the Nation for his Departure Observe the commandments given by Moses. Joshua 22:5 But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul."

38 Farewell Address of Joshua
7 Farewell Address of Joshua Warning to continue, and the results if they don’t. Joshua 23:14-16 It shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the Lord your God promised you, so the Lord will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the Lord your God has given you. When you have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you… then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you."

39 Farewell Address of Joshua Challenge to serve the Lord Joshua 24:14-15
7 Farewell Address of Joshua Challenge to serve the Lord Joshua 24:14-15 Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

40 God Reveals Himself in Connection with the History of this Nation Israel.
Israel’s history can only be explained by Divine intervention. The promise of Canaan-land was connected with Messianic Hope. Gen 12 Both “out of Egypt” and “into Canaan” were supernatural; by Divine intervention.

41 7 Judges 2 So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.

42 Scene 8 The Time of the judges

43 Scene 8 in the land (Judges) The tribes take their inheritance, but they were incomplete in their obedience to drive out all the inhabitants of Canaan (Judges 1) There was a lack of unity in the land. In some ways they are not a nation, but more like12 separate states. They are constantly hounded by other nations.

44 Failure to drive out all the inhabitance of the land
Scene 8 Failure to drive out all the inhabitance of the land The children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day. Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor, Ibleam, or Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

45 Failure to drive out all the inhabitance of the land
Scene 8 Failure to drive out all the inhabitance of the land Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute. Nor did Asher… Nor did Naphtali… Nor did Dan…

46 8 Problems Moses had given the people three commands concerning the time when they would enter the land. Deuteronomy 7:1-5 Command What They Did 1. Destroy all the inhabitants But they did not of the land. 2. Shun false gods. But they did not. 3. Do not intermarry with But they did. pagan neighbors. Did not drive out all inhabitants Judges 1:28-35 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out. [29] Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. [30] Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute. [31] Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. [32] So the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out. [33] Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them. [34] And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; [35] and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they were put under tribute. Served false Gods Judges 2:11-12 Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; [12] and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. Intermarried with Pagans Judges 3:5-7 Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. [6] And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods. [7] So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs.

47 8 The Repeated Cycle Sin (Baal Worship)
Salvation (Through Divinely Raised-up Judges) Servitude (To Foreign Aggressors) Supplication (To the Merciful God for Relief)

48 8 The Need for Deliverers Judges (These are temporary, local leaders.) God used pagan nations to discipline His people. Judges 2:11-15 Judges were appointed and empowered by God to deliver the people. Judges were crisis leaders Judges 2:16-19 Judges 2:11-15 …they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. [13] They forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. [14] And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. [15] Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed.

52 The road to a King Judges 21:25
8 The road to a King Judges 21:25 The book of Judges is characterized by gross idolatry and gross immorality. “In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges 21:25

53 8 Ruth The Moabite Gentile becomes the grandmother of the King (Ruth 4:18-22) In the Days of the Judges Ruth 1:1 The Faithfulness of Ruth Ruth 1:16-18 The Grandmother of David Ruth 4:13-17 In the Lineage of Christ Matthew 1:5

54 A Thread of Redemption The Kinsman Redeemer
Naomi had a kinsman whose name was Boaz. Ruth “happened” to come to the portions of the field belonging to Boaz. So Boaz took Ruth, she became his wife, and the LORD enabled her to conceive … so they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David. Boaz bought the field to get the Bride … Jesus’ parable of the treasure in the field. (Mt.13:44)
