1 Metric Measurements

2 Metric Conversion Rap - by The Metric Crew – YouTube
Metric & Standard Measurement Systems – YouTube Metric rap TeacherTube - A Better Way Called S. I.

3 English Units of Measurment
VOLUME Ounce Pound Ton WEIGHT LENGTH Cup Quart Gallon Cubic Foot Cubic Yard Inch Foot Yard Mile MASS Slug DENSITY Lb/ft³ TEMPERATURE Fahrenheit SPEED or VELOCITY miles per hour

4 English Conversions You Must Know
1 mile = 5280 feet 1 foot = 12 inches 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 minute = 60 seconds 1 hour = 60 minutes 1 week = 7 days 1 yard = 3 feet

5 What is the Metric System?
A system of measurement based on multiples of ten. Developed and first used by scientists in the 1700’s Used by most nations other than the US Metric 4 US - Metric is the better system for America! What is the SI Measurement System? Improved version of the metric system developed in mid 1900’s Why do scientists use the SI (metric) system? Ease of using powers of 10 Common communication between scientists

6 What is a Standard? An exact quantity that people agree to use for comparisons. Metric units for which there is a standard are also called fundamental units or base units. These are meter (m) - length kilogram (kg) - mass second (s) - time kelvin (K)– temperature ampere (A)– electric current mole (mol)– amount of matter in a substance candela (cd)- intensity of light Base unit definitions: Meter

7 Common metric units WEIGHT LENGTH VOLUME MASS DENSITY g/ml g/cm³ kg/m³
Newton (N) WEIGHT LENGTH VOLUME Meter (m) Centimeter (cm) Kilometer (km) Millimeter (mm) Liter (l) Milliliter (ml) Centimeter cubed (cm³) Meter cubed (m³) MASS Gram Kilogram milligram DENSITY g/ml g/cm³ kg/m³ TEMPERATURE Celsius (º C) Kelvin (K) SPEED or VELOCITY m/sec km/hr

8 Mass: the quantity of matter in an object
Weight: force that results from gravity acting on an object * Mass and weight are not the same thing. The mass of an object will be the same regardless of where it is in the universe. Gravity is not the same everywhere in the universe or everywhere on Earth, so the weight of an object will vary depending on its location. Volume: The amount of space an object takes up Density: the mass per unit volume of an object

9 How do English units relate to Metric units?
1 meter ~ 39 inches 1 kilometer ~ 6/10 of a mile 1 liter ~ a quart 1 kilogram ~ 2 pounds 1 ounce ~ 28 grams

10 Common Metric Prefixes
Symbol Meaning Giga G Mega M Kilo- k 1 000 Hecto h 100 Deca da 10 Deci d 0.1 or 1/10 Centi c 0.01 or 1/100 Milli m 0.001 or 1/1000 Micro or 1/ Nano n Pico p What mnemonic is helpful in recalling the prefixes shaded in blue?

11 Derived Units A portion or multiple of a standard unit or a combination of standard units. Examples: millimeter, kilometer, and cm³ are derived units of meter gram and milligram are derived units of kilogram g/cm³ is a combination of units

12 Standard or Derived? Minutes Liters Kilogram Kelvin m/s

13 What SI (metric) unit would be used for the following?
Mass of sugar cube - Volume of water in measuring cup - Length of your shoe - Volume of gallon of milk - Mass of yourself - Distance from here to office - Distance from here to Columbus -

14 What would the correct unit be when using the Metric System?
1. The distance between Opelika & Phenix City is about 50 _______. 2. A postage stamp has a mass of about 15 ____________. 3. An eye dropper full of medicine contains about 1 __________. 4. A full half gallon of milk is about 2 _____________. 5. The length of a pencil is about 12 _________________. 6. A paper clip has a mass of about 1 ___________

15 How do you convert from one metric unit to another?
By multiplying or dividing by factors of 10. This can easily be done by moving the decimal to the right when multiplying and moving the decimal to the left when dividing. The mnemonic below is also very helpful. K H D B (meter) d c m (gram ) (liter)

16 How do you convert from one metric unit to another?
K H D B (meter) d c m (gram ) (liter) Convert the followingL 50 m = ___________cm 80 m = ______________km 780 mm = _______________m 780 mm = ___________km 456.3 cm = ___________ m

17 How do you convert from one metric unit to another?
K H D B (meter) d c m (gram ) (liter) Convert the following: 480 g = ___________mg 480 g = ______________kg 6 kg = _______________g 6 kg = ___________cg g = ___________ mg

18 How do you convert from one metric unit to another?
K H D B (meter) d c m (gram ) (liter) K H D B (meter) d c m Convert the following: 3 L = ______________mL 34.6 mL = ____________cL 4 kL = _____________L

19 G x x M x x K H D B d c m x x µ x x n x x p
(gram ) (liter) (meter) Convert the following: 4.6mg = ____________ng 480 Mg = ___________kg 480 ng = _____________cg

20 Metric to Metric Conversion
1 km = meters 1 meter = 100 cm 1 meter = 1000 mm The units grams or liter can be substituted for meters.

21 Metric to Metric Conversion
1 km = meters 1 meter = 100 cm 1 meter = 1000 mm 1 kg = grams 1gram = 100 cg 1 gram = 1000 mg 1 kL = liters 1 liter = 100 cL 1 liter = 1000 mL

22 Conversion Units 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 mile = 1.61 km 1 pound = .45 kilogram 1 quart = .95 liters 1 ml = 1 cm³
