15 Homework Worst Sinner? Why? Holiest person? Why? Definition of Sin

16 Story Time w/ Pastor Matt
Life or Death

17 The Fight of Your Life Battling Sin

18 I Timothy 6:12 “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession.”

19 Timeline 7am-4:00pm Wake up/School 4:00-6:00pm Practice 6:00-6:45pm
Dinner 6:45-8:00pm Homework 8:00-10:30pm TV/Video Games 10:30pm Sleep

20 “We vigorously seek to eliminate our weaknesses, particularly when it affects how others think of us. Why do we work harder on our “public” weaknesses than we do on addressing the sins of our hearts?”

21 Our Tendancy We do not take our sin as seriously as we should
How serious is sin? We wrongly categorize sin as “major” or “minor” Who decides what is “major” or “minor”? We lack perseverance in battling our sin Why is perseverance necessary? We battle our sinful actions, but we fail to deal with our sinful hearts Why are actions easier to fix than our hearts? We confuse godly and worldly sorrow What’s the difference?

22 Elyse Fitzpatrick “This struggle against the sin in our heart is precious because by it we learn what a great price the Lord Jesus has paid…we will learn to trust Him and distrust ourselves, to hate sin and love holiness, to cultivate humility and to long for heaven…”

23 The Gospel Romans 8:1 – “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…” “If God has done a work in our hearts, we should want to battle the sin of our hearts.”

24 Why Battle Sin? We must understand what sin is.
“A sin…consists in doing , saying, thinking, or imagining anything that is not in perfect conformity with the mind and law of God.” – J.C. Ryle We need to understand that we are sinful by nature. “The more you discover the power of indwelling sin, the less you will suffer its effects.” – Kris Lundgaard

25 Why Battle Sin? We must understand God’s view of sin.
“His holy character demands that he hate sin, judge sinners, and pour out his wrath on those who sin.” – Karl Graustein It is essential that we understand the effects of our sin. “…understand the price Jesus had to pay on the cross, and that every sin affects God, our relationship with God and us personally…”

26 Why Battle Sin We must understand the consequences of not battling sin. “Sin aims always at the utmost…Every unclean thought or glance would be adultery if it could; every covetous desire would be oppression, every thought of unbelief would be atheism, might it grow to its head.” – John Owen

27 Application Pray to God for conviction of sin.
Pray for help from the Holy Spirit. Seek help from others. Repent and ask for forgiveness. Battle sin with truths found in God’s Word.

28 “When we are mostly concerned with avoiding discipline or becoming popular, we may change for a time, but it will not be a genuine change of heart, and it will not please God. To truly change and consistently want to flee from sin and pursue holiness, we must want to love, obey, and please God.”
