1 We are starting a new unit today!
Hi Jaguars! We are starting a new unit today!

2 It is under the unit heading of people’s world
The lessons are: A: What is population density and distribution? B: Where is world population growing? C: One country’s way of controlling population - China D: Why do people move from one place to another? E: What is it like moving to another country? F: Quiz- showing off our work etc

3 The wiki page for this section is:

4 Where we are headed today
First of all we will define a few terms Then we will look at a couple of maps that show where there are lots of people living and where there are only a few, and try and see if there is a patterns to all this Next we will talk about some of the reasons why some places have different amounts of peoples Then finally, go back and look at the why the population is high or low in particular places. You will need to make notes as we go, to be able to do the homework – if you have the ones I sent you printed out, this will be far easier than have to do your own – but you really do need to make notes of some sort.

5 Population density and distribution

6 Defining a few terms Population density is the number of people per square kilometre Population distribution is how spread out people are across the Earth’s surface, Places with low population density (say 1 person per square kilometre) are said to be sparsely populated Places with a high population density are said to be densely populated What density do you think would qualify as high?

7 I think we would all agree that London is densely populated
A thematic map is one that looks at one idea, like rainfall or the borders of countries or in this case population. A choropleth map is a kind of thematic map Choropleth map is one which divided into areas that are shaded according to the measurement of the theme being displayed. This is a population choropleth map of London.

8 What would be your best guess?
What do you think the dark blue might stand for, in people per square kilometre? More than 1000, More than 2,500 More than 5,000, More than 10,000, More than 20,000 More than 50,000? Dark blue 10,000, mid dark 7,500, mid 5000, light mid 2500 and palest less 2500

9 Can you work out these population densities?
UK has a population of 58,000,000 and an area of 245,000 km2 France has a population of 58,000,000 and an area of 545,000 Brazil has a population of 162,000,000 and an area of 8,400,000 Australia has a population of 18,000,000 and an area of 7,618,000 USA has a population of 266,000,000 and an area of 9,100,000 China has a population of 1,300,000,000 and an area of 9,326,000

10 Type many adjectives as you can for each photo below :
Photo A Photo B Answer the questions below : Why is this area sparsely populated ? Why is this area densely populated ?

11 Describe the population distribution of the UK
Activity 2 – Where do people in Britain live ? Describe the population distribution of the UK Use HLGT H – Highest L – Lowest GT – General Trend

12 Describe the population distribution of the UK
Activity 2 – Where do people in Britain live ? Describe the population distribution of the UK Low Use HLGT H – Highest L – Lowest GT – General Trend General Trend Choropleth map High

13 World Population Density – by country
H L GT

14 World Population Density – by country
Western Europe and Asia are densely populated North America, South America and Africa have a low population density

15 Why are people distributed unevenly across the Earth’s surface ?
Natural Routes Relief Climate Physical Factors Water Supply Vegetation Natural Resources Soil Human Factors Political Economic Social

16 World Population Density – by country
From the things we have just been discussing can anyone come up with country/part of the world that has high/low population density and give a reason why.

17 Can we do any better now that we have thought about some of the factors that affect the population density? Photo A Photo B

18 Homework Here is the same map again What can you remember about it?
Since we last looked at this, we have been talking about reasons for why the population density is different from one place to another Can you give me some reasons why a place may be sparsely populated? Densely populated?
