“He had to go very close to see that it was an old man, a very old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn't get up, impeded by his enormous wings.”

12 Grandmother told him ghost stories and of superstitions and omens—”the wildest of stories with a completely normal tone of voice” that made the listener wonder if they really were true. Her stories had him afraid to leave his chair, half terrified of ghosts!
