1 Who is Jesus? Before the Foundation of the World (Eternity Past), His Earthly Ministry and Passion (Incarnation) and His Resurrection! Can we adequately “define and defend” the Person, Purpose and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ?

2 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
How is our APOLOGETICS (Systematic Defense) of the person, purpose and work of Jesus Christ? Is our view of the person and purpose of the Lord Jesus Christ inadequate (too narrow)? Is our understanding of His accomplished work on the cross insufficient (too limited)? Can we adequately define and defend the person, purpose and work of the Lord Jesus Christ?

3 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
So what’s the purpose of our Apologetics Bible Study? Exalt (Bring Glory to) the person of Jesus Christ, and Expand our knowledge and understanding of the Purpose and Passion (Cross-Work) of the Lord Jesus Christ (what did He fully accomplish on the Cross)! We want to broaden, deepen, enhance, enrich and expand our awareness of and appreciation for (awe, reverence, wonder) the Person, Purpose and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ (e.g. His incarnation, His ministry, His crucifixion, His death and His glorious resurrection!

QUESTION: Is the Lord Jesus just your Savior, the one who saved you from the “penalty of sin”? Is He just your Friend, your Comforter and your Shepherd? ABSOLUTELY TRUE… But, the Person, Purpose and Work [on the Cross] of the Lord Jesus Christ — the third person of the Triune Godhead — is so much, much more!!!

"Jesus" is a transliteration, occurring in a number of languages and based on the Latin Iesus, of the Greek Ιησους (Iēsoûs), or Hebrew-Aramaic ישוע (Yeshua ), (Joshua), meaning "the Lord God saves". "Christ" is His title derived from the Greek Χριστος (Christós), meaning the "Anointed One” (Messiah) a translation of the Hebrew-derived Mashiach.

10 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
God the Son 1 We teach that Jesus Christ, second person of the Trinity, possesses all the divine attributes and excellencies, and in these He is coequal and coeternal with God the Father (John 10:30; 14:9). We teach that God the Father created “the heavens and the earth and all that is in them” according to His own will, through His Son, Jesus Christ, by whom all things continue in existence and in operations (John 1:3; Col 1:15–17; Heb 1:2). 1 MacArthur, John (2006). The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. Thomas Nelson Publishers.

11 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
God the Son (con’t) We teach that in the incarnation (i.e. God become man), Christ surrendered only the privileges of deity, but nothing of His divine essence, either in degree or kind. In His incarnation, the eternally existing second person of the Trinity accepted all the essential characteristics of humanity, and so became the God-man (Phil 2:5–8; Col 2:9). We teach that Jesus Christ represents humanity and deity in indivisible oneness (John 5:23; 14:9-10; Col 2:9). We teach that our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through the shedding of His blood and His sacrificial death on the cross, and that His death was voluntary, vicarious, substitutionary, propitiatory and redemptive (John 10:15; Rom 3:24-25, 5:8; 1 Pet 2:24).

12 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
God the Son (con’t) We teach that on the basis of the efficacy of the death of our Lord Jesus Christ, the believing sinner is freed from the punishment, the penalty, the power, and one day the very presence of sin; and that he is declared righteous, given eternal life, and adopted into the family of God (Rom 3:25; 5:8-9; 1 Pet 2:24; 3:18). We teach that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead and that He is now ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He now mediates as our Advocate and High-Priest (Matt 28:6; Luke 24:38, 39; Acts 2:30-31; Rom 4:25; 8:34; Heb 7:25; 9:24; 1 John 2:1).

13 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
God the Son (con’t) We teach that in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave, God confirmed the deity of His Son and gave proof that God has accepted the atoning work of Christ on the cross. Jesus’ bodily resurrection is also the guarantee of a future resurrection life for all believers (John 5:26–29; 14:19; Rom 4:25; 6:5–10; 1 Cor 15:20, 23). We teach that Jesus Christ will return to receive the church, which is His body, unto Himself at the Rapture and, returning with His church in glory, will establish His millennial kingdom on earth (Acts 1:9–11; 1 Thess 4:13–18; Rev 20).

How can we know the Attributes, Character and Person of Jesus Christ? Examine His Biblical Names and Titles! Hebrews 3:1-3 – Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; 2He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house. 3For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. Hebrews 9:15 – He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

(con’t) Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had [Literally, was obligated ] to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 1 John 2:2 …we have an Advocate1 with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation [or satisfaction] for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world [without distinction]. 1Greek, Paracletos, one called alongside to help; Substitutionary Intercessor.

Questions… which require sincere contemplation and Scriptural confirmation (grounding): What did the Lord Jesus Christ accomplish by His death on the cross? For whom (past, present and future) did the Lord Jesus Christ… make sacrificial and substitutionary atonement shed His innocent, perfect and pure blood appease and satisfy the righteous wrath of the Lord God willingly suffer the humiliation, pain and shame, then willingly give-up His own sovereign life on the cross?

23 The Cross-Work (Passion) of Christ Does this represent all that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplish by His death on the Cross?

24 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
The “cross-work” (Passion) of Christ… What did Christ accomplish by His death on the Cross? Atonement (Substitutionary Sacrifice) – Justification – is a right legal standing before God; a pardon from the guilt and penalty of sin Redemption – purchased from the “slave market” …the bondage and penalty of sin Righteousness (Imputed Righteousness) – Perfected Justification Propitiation (Satisfaction) – the “propitiatory sacrifice” required to satisfy the just demands and righteous wrath of God Expiation (Expiate) – (ex pee ay' shuhn) to appease God’s wrath

25 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
The SIN of God’s elect (past, present, future) must be paid in full for our Redemption and a perfect substitutionary sacrifice was required for our Atonement. ** Jesus Christ is our PARDON! AND, God’s elect (past, present, future) must be clothed with the “imputed righteousness” of Christ (Justification), before we are made acceptable to an absolutely righteous, thrice- holy God. God’s justice and “righteous wrath” must be appeased (expiation) and satisfied (propitiation)! ** Jesus Christ is our PERFECTION!

26 The Cross-Work (Passion) of Christ What the Lord Jesus accomplish by His death on the Cross!

27 Who is Jesus? Apologetics Bible Study
God the Father had to impose His righteous wrath on SIN, and God the Son had to endure (i.e. suffer and satisfy) the justice and righteous wrath of God for the “penalty and punishment” of whose SIN? Therefore, one of the following statements must be TRUE! The Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died for… Some of the sins of all men, without exception? Some of the sins of some men, without distinction? All the sins of all men, without exception? All the sins of some men, without distinction?

Matthew 22:14 - For many are called [i.e. heard the message, the outward call], but few are chosen [elected, received the inward call]. Luke 18:6-7 - And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? Mark 13: Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven. John 15: You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. Acts 13: When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. 49And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.

Romans 8: And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose [Rom 8:30; 9:24; 11:29; Gal 1:6, 15; 5:8; Eph 1:11; 3:11; 2 Thess 2:14; Heb 9:15; 1 Pet 2:9; 3:9]. 29For those whom He foreknew [Rom 11:2; 1 Cor 8:3; 2 Tim 1:9; 1 Pet 1:2, 20], He also predestined [Rom 9:23; 1 Cor 2:7; Eph 1:5, 11] to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30and these whom He predestined, [Rom 9:23; 11:29; 1 Cor 2:7; Eph 1:5, 11] He also called [Rom 8:28; 9:24; 1 Cor 1:9; Gal 1:6, 15; 5:8; Eph 1:11; 3:11; 2 Thess 2:14; Heb 9:15; 1 Pet 2:9; 3:9]; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Ephesians 1:3-6 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love. 5He predestined [Literally, having predestined] us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention [good pleasure] of His will, 6to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved [Christ Jesus]. 2 Thessalonians 2: But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation, through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:1-2 - Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens…, who are chosen 2according to the foreknowledge (foreordained intimate love of God with the objects of His saving power) of God [Rom 11:2; 1 Cor 8:3; 2 Tim 1:9; 1 Pet 1:2, 20] the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.

II Timothy 1:9 - …according to the power of God, 9who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began…, 1 Peter 2: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Revelation 17:14 - These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.
