1 Take out the homework from last night then do, Warm up #1

2 Mean, Median, Mode, Range and Outlier

3 Learning Targets For a given set of data: LT # 3: I can find the mean.
LT #4: I can find the median. LT #5: I can find mode. LT #6: I can find the range. LT #7: I can find the outlier and determine its effect on the mean. LT #8: I can find the minimum and maximum of a data set.

4 For Learning to Happen! Calcs okay for math practice/homework,
Take out a calculator. Be sure you have a whiteboard and pen Calcs okay for math practice/homework, but NOT on the test.

5 6 + 9 = 15 Vocabulary Review Sum – the answer to an addition problem.
Addend – the numbers you add together to get the sum. 6 + 9 = 15

6 Definition Mean Means Average

7 Mean is found by evening out the numbers
2, 5, 2, 1, 5

8 Mean is found by evening out the numbers
2, 5, 2, 1, 5

9 Mean is found by evening out the numbers
2, 5, 2, 1, 5 mean = 3

10 How to Find the Mean of a Group of Numbers
Step 1 – Add all the numbers. 8, 10, 12, 18, 22, 26 = 96

11 How to Find the Mean of a Group of Numbers
Step 2 – Divide the sum by the number of addends. 8, 10, 12, 18, 22, 26 = 96 How many addends are there?

12 How to Find the Mean of a Group of Numbers
Step 2 – Divide the sum by the number of addends. 1 6 6) 96 # of addends sum

13 Is 16 a reasonable average for this set of numbers?
8, 10, 12, 18, 22, 26

14 What is the mean of these numbers?
26, 33, 41, 52 38

15 Definition Median is in the Middle

16 Definition Median – the middle number in a set of ordered numbers. 1, 3, 7, 10, 13 Median = 7

17 How to Find the Median in a Group of Numbers
Step 1 – Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest. 21, 18, 24, 19, 27 18, 19, 21, 24, 27

18 How to Find the Median in a Group of Numbers
Step 2 – Find the middle number. 21, 18, 24, 19, 27 18, 19, 21, 24, 27

19 How to Find the Median in a Group of Numbers
Step 3 – If there are two middle numbers, find the mean of these two numbers. 18, 19, 21, 25, 27, 28

20 How to Find the Median in a Group of Numbers
Step 3 – If there are two middle numbers, find the mean of these two numbers. 46 = median 23 2) 46

21 What is the median of these numbers?
29, 8, 4, 11, 19 4, 8, 11, 19, 29 11

22 What is the median of these numbers?
31, 7, 2, 12, 15, 19 2, 7, 12, 15, 19, 31 13.5 2) = 27 27.0 -26 10

23 Definition Mode is the Most Popular

24 Definition Mode – the number that appears most frequently in a set of numbers. 1, 1, 3, 7, 10, 13 Mode = 1

25 How to Find the Mode in a Group of Numbers
Step 1 – Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest. 21, 18, 24, 19, 18 18, 18, 19, 21, 24

26 How to Find the Mode in a Group of Numbers
Step 2 – Find the number that is repeated the most. 21, 18, 24, 19, 18 18, 18, 19, 21, 24

27 Which number is the mode?
29, 8, 4, 8, 19 4, 8, 8, 19, 29 8

28 Which number is the mode?
1, 2, 2, 2, 9, 9, 4, 9, 10 1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 9, 9, 9, 10 2 and 9

29 between the largest and the smallest number.
Definition Range is the difference between the largest and the smallest number. Remember DIFFERENCE mean subtract!

30 Definition Range – the difference between the greatest and the least value in a set of numbers. 1, 1, 3, 7, 10, 13 Range = 12

31 How to Find the Range in a Group of Numbers
Step 1 – Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest. 21, 18, 24, 19, 27 18, 19, 21, 24, 27

32 How to Find the Range in a Group of Numbers
Step 2 – Find the lowest and highest numbers. 21, 18, 24, 19, 27 18, 19, 21, 24, 27

33 How to Find the Range in a Group of Numbers
Step 3 – Find the difference between these 2 numbers. 18, 19, 21, 24, 27 27 – 18 = 9 The range is 9

34 What is the range? 29, 8, 4, 8, 19 4, 8, 8, 19, 29 29 – 4 = 25

35 OUTLIER An outlier is a number that is much higher or much lower than the other numbers Look at these numbers. 3, 6, 4, 58, 1, 7, 3. 58 What is the outlier?

36 THE END Take Out Your Learning Targets

37 LT # 3 - 6 Measures of Central Tendency
Mean - the average. Add the values and divide by the number of the numbers. Median - the middle number. All the numbers must be in order. Mode - the most common number. The number you see the most. Range - the largest number minus the smallest number.

38 LT # 7 OUTLIER An outlier is a number that is much higher or much lower than the other numbers. 3, 9, 4, 36, 8, 7, 3 1) What is the outlier? 36 707 =10 2) Find the mean of all the numbers 346 = 5.6 3) Find the mean without the outlier. 4) How did the outlier affect the mean? The outlier increased the mean

39 Minimum & Maximum #8 The minimum of a data set is the lowest value.
The maximum of a data set is the highest value. Find the minimum and maximum of the following data set: 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 9, 11, 14, 16, 19, 22 Minimum Maximum

40 LT #3 – 6 Line Plot 10 12 13 14 15 sum # 133 Mean = = 10 14 + 14
sum # 133 Mean = = Sum = = 133 10 Median = 10, 12, 12, 13, 14, 14, 14, 14, 15, 15 2 Mode = 14 10, 12, 12, 13, 14, 14, 14, 14, 15, 15 Range = Maximum – Minimum = = 5
