1 Ignition: Parts and Application Test

2 1) ? Ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine combustion chamber (jumps the gap) Has 2 conductors (electrodes) one is connected to the high voltage power source via high-tension cable and the other is grounded to the engine. Electrodes are separated by a small opening called the gap.

Consists of coils of wire around an iron core that induces an electric current when it is rotated in a magnetic field The position of the P/M causes the polarity to reverse direction which causes the magnetic field to collapse inducing a high voltage current to flow into the plug and jump the gap Roughly 20,000 volts

4 3) ? Maintains engine speed and sometimes balance
Houses the permanent magnet that is used to cut the magnetic lines of force between itself and the armature coil Flywheel key allows correct engine timing also allows current passage to ground

Points were used on older engines they are driven off of an offset lobe on the crankshaft which made them open and close sending a current pulse through the plug wire into the plug jumping the gap causing ignition A condensor is used in this type of system that holds a pre-charge to aid in ignition

Utilizes an electronic circuit board that tells the coil when to fire (like a switch) Used mainly on multi-cylinder engines Less moving parts very reliable Used in conjunction with an alternator or a generator Roughly 30,000 volts

Disrupts current flow in OFF position May also have different positions for auxillary functions Can be identified as a simple switch or utilize a keyed slot

9 7) ? Consists of a machined body that houses other parts in order to allow for automatic fuel air mixture

10 8) ? A part hollow internally that regulates fuel by floating and controlling fuel intake of carburetor Pivots on a rod that connects to carb. body

11 9) ? Valve controlled by the float that regulates fuel intake inside the carburetor Needles can be rubber, brass, even plastic Seats are usually brass and replaceable but are sometimes cast into the carburetor body

12 10) ? Sometimes referred to as butterfly valves though they have separate theoretical jobs they physically do the same thing, open and close

13 11) Bonus ? Can be used to adjust air to fuel mixture (main jet)
Can be used to adjust idle speed (secondary jet) Not all carburetors have these jet valves
