1 Where in the world is water?

2 Georgia Standard S6E3. Students will recognize the significant role of water in earth processes. a. Explain that a large portion of the Earth’s surface is water, consisting of oceans, rivers, lakes, underground water, and ice.

3 Essential Question Where is water located on earth?
How much of the earth’ water is salt water and how much is freshwater?

4 Throw the Globe Catch the globe and then look at your fingers. Count how many fingers land on squares with water and how many land on squares with land.

5 How much of the Earth is covered in water?
The majority of the Earth's surface is covered with water. Most of the water on the Earth is salt water. Only a small amount is fresh water, including water in rivers, many lakes, underground water, and in the form of ice.

6 Earth’s Water Approximately 70 percent of Earth's surface is covered with water. Only one percent of this water is fresh we can use.

8 Important Facts About Water
The earth's oceans are connected. Almost 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Water is not evenly distributed, and most of it is unsuitable for drinking.

9 Where in the world is water?
Of all the total volume water on the Earth (1.36 billion km3, or 326 million mi3): 97% is in the oceans as salt water, 2% is frozen fresh water in ice caps and glaciers, 1% is fresh water in lakes and streams, groundwater, and water vapor in the atmosphere.

10 Why Study Water? Roughly 70 % of an adult’s body is made up of water.
Water is absolutely essential to the human body’s survival. A person can live for about a month without food, but only about a week without water. Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. Wherever it travels, water carries chemicals, minerals, and nutrients with it.

11 Why Study Water? The average person in the United States uses anywhere from gallons of water per day. Flushing the toilet actually takes up the largest amount of this water. Somewhere between 70 and 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water. Without water, life would not exist!

12 Why Study Water? We can use less than one percent of the water on Earth for drinking and personal hygiene. We also use this fresh water for agriculture, fisheries, transportation, heating and cooling, manufacturing, and many other purposes. Unfortunately, unless we use our freshwater wisely, rivers, lakes, and groundwater can become depleted or polluted, and unavailable or unsuitable for life.

13 Fact or Fiction? Most of Earth's freshwater is found in streams and lakes. Most of the freshwater on Earth is located in glaciers and ice caps.

14 Fact or Fiction? Almost 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Almost 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by land.
