2 Information Is Growing at an Unprecedented Pace
IDC Study Predicts 6x Increase by 2010 100B 200B 300B 400B 500B 600B 700B 800B 900B 1,000B Digital Information Why is next generation backup and recovery so important? We are in an age of unprecedented data growth. It’s the biggest challenge facing every customer today, how to manage and keep up with this growth. In a recent study, IDC estimates that the total volume of digital information will surge six-fold in the next few years, to an astonishing 988 exabytes—988 billion gigabytes, and 85 percent of the new information will be managed by organizations. This means 2 things. First, most current production environments will not be able to keep up without adding significant resources, infrastructure, and costs. So today, many customers are not only looking for ways to store more information, but to store information more intelligently. Second, for every gigabyte of growth in the production environment means two to eight times in supporting backup infrastructure. Traditional technologies such as tape and optical can no longer support the IT infrastructure, so customers are looking for next generation backup and recovery solutions to manage this growth in backup data. Production systems can’t keep up with information growth Gigabytes What about backup & recovery? 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Source: IDC, “The Expanding Digital Universe,” March 2007

15 MetaLUN Technology: Efficient Storage Provisioning
EMC CLARiiON AX4 January 2009 EMC CLARiiON AX4 January 2008 MetaLUN Technology: Efficient Storage Provisioning Real-time LUN expansion allows quick creation of new virtual machines New capacity immediately available to VMware ESX Server No reboot necessary Raw device mapping (RDM) and virtual machine file system (VMFS) support Efficient use of IT resources Virtual Machines APP APP APP APP APP APP APP APP OS OS OS OS OS OS OS OS Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. MetaLUN technology allows you to harness the power of data mobility and resource flexibility. After all, data mobility and resource flexibility are two main drivers for deploying a virtualized server environment. Being able to quickly and nondisruptively deploy new servers has literally changed the game in information technology. MetaLUN and virtual LUN technologies on CLARiiON AX4 complement these drivers towards server virtualization, as they allow for real-time/online expansion of LUNs and transparent volume movement respectively, with no interruption to host I/O. MetaLUNs are created when a single LUN is expanded via several methods—concatenation, striping, or both. When virtual machines require additional capacity, users easily provide additional capacity to their application with metaLUN technology. The real-time LUN expansion also supports the quick creation of new virtual machines. And with the new capacity immediately available to the VMware ESX Server, no reboot is necessary, making this functionality imperceptible to the host application. Both raw device mapping and virtual machine file system are supported with metaLUNs, and users can leverage this key technology to make efficient use of their storage resources in a VMware environment. EMC channel partners also offers users the best practices needed to implement metaLUNs in dynamic VMware deployments. VMware ESX Server MetaLUN Technology CLARiiON AX4 15

16 Virtual LUN Technology: Enable ILM for VMware
EMC CLARiiON AX4 January 2009 EMC CLARiiON AX4 January 2008 Virtual LUN Technology: Enable ILM for VMware Tier virtual machines within CLARiiON AX4 Alter performance characteristic of virtual machine file systems Nondisruptive to virtual machines and applications Virtual Machines APP APP APP APP APP APP APP APP OS OS OS OS OS OS OS OS With CLARiiON AX4, users have the capability to mix a wider variety of drive types within a single frame. This functionality to mix SATA and SAS in a single frame complements the economics found only with server virtualization. Provided free of charge for CLARiiON customers, virtual LUNs make possible the ability to tier virtual machines within the system—between drive types, online, and nondisruptively. The resource flexibility to move virtual machines within the array, based on the application performance requirements, is now possible. Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. In the event that a virtual machine becomes less critical, virtual LUNs can be used to nondisruptively migrate information to a cost-effective tier of online storage. This type of migration may happen at different points in the business cycle. For example, at the end of a quarter, when additional virtual machine performance is needed for mission-critical, data-processing applications, the virtual machines can be migrated between different drive types using virtual LUN technology. Virtual LUNs can also be used when reconfiguring the system layout or adding additional capacity. This technology makes CLARiiON one of the most flexible, midrange, networked storage systems—allowing you to manage and change the system configuration as your VMware environment changes and grows. Then next new innovation is software-based. New CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning allows users to present an application with more capacity than is physically allocated to it in the storage array. CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning simplifies and accelerates processes and delivers “just-in-time” capacity allocation and improved utilization. Virtual pools are easy to create whereby you simply assign a name, select the drive types and capacity amounts, and choose the appropriate RAID level for protection. To quickly allocate capacity, the user simply selects a pool, chooses the host, and specifies the virtual capacity amount to allocate. Once capacity is allocated, CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning has the capabilities to monitor the usage versus pre-set thresholds and automated alerts so that pools can be expanded nondisruptively. Note to Presenter: CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning will be available in October 2008 and supports advanced software capabilities, including Virtual LUN, Navisphere Quality of Service Manager, Navisphere Analyzer, and SnapView. Supports advanced capabilities: Virtual LUN, Navisphere Quality of Service Manager, Navisphere Analyzer, SnapView

Navisphere Quality of Service Manager makes this possible with CLARiiON CX4 by optimizing application performance within the CLARiiON array. Letting you decide which applications get more of the available system resources enables you to meet service levels on an application-by-application basis. This means you don’t run the risk of sacrificing performance as you add more applications to the array.

25 Businesses are focusing on “Information Lifecycle Management”
What is Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)? Information Lifecycle Management Business Considerations - Example Retention cycle - Does the information need to be retained for a specific period for a corporate governance or regulatory purpose? Disposition cycle - Once the retention cycle is complete, should the information be disposed of completely archived to a lower-cost media ? Does the information need to be electronically shredded after the retention cycle is expired? Archival cycle - Does the information need to be archived for long periods? If so, does this archival need to be stored separately from the original? Access frequency - How frequently or infrequently is the information accessed once created? Will it be "Write once / Read many" or "Write once / Read rarely" or will it have a more active access frequency? Read / Write performance cycle - Based on the access frequency of the data what is the required performance for both read and write operations? What technologies are appropriate for these requirements? Read / Write permissions - Does the information need to be stored on non-erasable, non-rewritable media? Recovery performance cycle - How quickly does the information need to be recovered? Security Issues - How will the compromise of this information at different points in its lifecycle effect the business? The ILM Process With all of that said, ILM has in a short period become the common descriptor for the process of managing data throughout its lifecycle. While DLM is required to implement ILM, ILM is the umbrella term. The entire process of ILM involves multiple steps as we outlined in our initial paper. Those steps are: Assessment Socialization Classification Automation Review The process of managing business data throughout its lifecycle from conception until disposal in a manner that optimizes storage at the lowest cost

26 Importance of Tiered Storage
ILM matches the business value of the data to the value of the hardware Qualifying data into “tiers” based on business value to lower TCO Improve service levels to users Expensive FC disk is used for important data FATA disk can be used for 2nd tier of data Tape for off-line storage

27 Advanced Storage Tiering Capabilities

28 Flash Drives for Tier “0” Requirements
EMC CLARiiON CX4 Series August 2008 Flash Drives for Tier “0” Requirements Faster performance 30 times IOPS and less than 1 millisecond response time More energy efficient 38 percent less per terabyte and 98 percent less per IO Better reliability No moving parts, faster RAID rebuilds IO per second Response Time 1 Flash drive 1 15K Fibre Channel drive 10 15K Fibre Channel drives 30 15K Fibre Channel drives Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. EMC is also the first and only vendor to introduce Tier “0” Flash drives to the midrange. This is a significant accomplishment, especially considering that EMC has the most intensive and lengthy qualification processes in the industry. CLARiiON’s Flash drives are the same Flash solid-state drive (SSD) technology that EMC delivered early in on Symmetrix DMX-4 series systems. These are not the same as flash drives in consumer electronics. They are enterprise-class Flash drives that provide ultra-fast read and write performance for IO- intensive applications and provide the best response times. As a result, CLARiiON CX4 is able to offer Tier “0” storage for breakthrough performance, providing 30 times the IOPS of a 15K Fibre Channel drive and consistently delivering less than 1 millisecond response times. CLARiiON Flash drives are well-suited for applications with demanding IO requirements such as Business Intelligence and analysis, Seismic Analysis and Survey, and database log tables. Flash drives are more energy efficient with 38 percent less energy required per terabyte and 98 percent less per IO. CLARiiON Flash drives also deliver better reliability than traditional disk drives since they have no moving parts and provide faster rebuilds. Note to Presenter: CLARiiON Flash drives will be generally available in October 2008 with initial support on the CLARiiON CX4-960. First midrange storage array to support Flash drives Flash drives

30 Is Your Business Protected ?
Perception versus Reality “It’s likely that IT operations professionals are crossing their fingers and hoping a disaster won’t hit, while business executives have no idea how vulnerable they really are to significant losses – or to going out of business altogether.” Forrester Research, 2007 Regulation, corporate governance and terrorism concerns encourage awareness of vulnerabilities Yet there continues to be a “protection gap” between business and IT executives The question ‘”How Effectively is Your Business Protected” can elicit a range of responses from various employees within a given company. In some respects, there has never been higher awareness by corporate executives regarding the vulnerabilities of not having sufficient protection of a key corporate asset, i.e., information. Devastating disasters and disruptions such as 9/11, the European floods of 2005, and Hurricane Katrina are just a few of events which have encouraged businesses to seriously evaluate their preparedness. However, there continues to be a perception gap between the levels of protection that IT executives know actually exist, and business executives that are typically not aware of the level of vulnerability to significant losses. The quote on this slide comes from Forrester’s whitepaper entitled “Six Years After 9/11, Most Firms are Not Ready for Another Disaster,” 30

31 Information Protection = RPO, RTO, and TCO
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) How much data loss? Recovery Time Objective (RTO) How long to restart and access applications? Days Weeks Hrs. Sec. Min. Automation Replication Restore from tape Tape backup This chart depicts the key components of service level as it applies to Recovery Point Objectives and Recovery Time Objectives, along with a sampling of where major Protection categories fit in relation to these criteria. RTO, i.e., the recovery time requirement, may range from seconds to days, and higher service level requirements typically are expressed in minutes or even seconds. EMC’s synchronous replication products typically enable restart in minutes. Then the question is “when I restart, as of what point in time prior to the event am I restarting from?” The answer to that question determines data loss….with sensitivity to data loss ranging from zero to days. Most typical mission-critical applications require data loss to be zero to only seconds. Synchronous replication or continuous data protection technologies enable minimizing data loss to at, or near, zero. Bear in mind that distance may be a factor too, in that it can limit synchronization and as a result, longer distances typically preclude zero data loss. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): Cost of acquiring and maintaining BC/DR infrastructure (capital, power, communications, processes, people)

32 What If You Were Able to Effectively
Meet protection service-level requirements on a consistent basis Restore your applications, mailboxes, files... or entire site in a timely manner Implement a cost-effective DR strategy with full confidence in your recovery processes Recover at a remote site without the headaches Incorporate virtual environments into existing BC/DR infrastructure This slide describes an ideal Information Protection scenario. Service levels are consistently met. Applications and data can be rapidly restored – as well as an entire site if necessary. A DR strategy is in place that is cost-effective, and supported by strong recovery processes. Recovery can take place at a remote site without needing to rely on tape – with its inherent unreliability. Both physical and virtual environments are protected within a single BC/DR infrastructure. The assets for protecting your information can be leveraged to make the overall organization more productive enabling parallel processes to be conducted, and alleviating conflicting use of data. 32

33 Different Ways to Replicate…
Choices to Meet Customer Requirements ARRAY-BASED Performance Scalable Management HOST Easily deployed Flexible Cost effective NETWORK-BASED Heterogeneous platforms Asynchronous CDP Let’s review some of the different ways you can replicate. EMC has many options to fit your specific situation, budget, and SLAs. Additionally, Recovery Time and Recover Point objectives will play a critical role in determining which solution works best for you. Array-based—or block-based—replication provides the highest level of performance as measured by lowest RTO and RPO, and is the most scalable solution. If you need a zero-data loss solution, such as an airline might need for its reservation system, you’ll need array-based replication. Network-based based replication like EMC RecoverPoint allows replication across heterogeneous platforms, more specifically, different array types. It provides continuous data protection in asynchronous environments. Finally, EMC RepliStor is our server-based file-level replication solution. It is very easily deployed and very flexible as it works with any storage array and network, and replicates over any distance for Windows environments. It’s also at the lowest cost point while still providing robust RTO and RPO, just not to the level of array and network-based replication. Recovery points and times range from seconds or minutes to just hours depending on numerous factors including network bandwidth, application and data scale, and servers. It is critical to match your specific RTO/RPO needs, environment, and budget to the right tiered recovery management replication solution. The first step is of course start with recovery—what needs to be recovered, how fast, and how much data loss is acceptable. Oftentimes in large environments customers use a combination of the above replication technologies to protect their data, because all data does not have the same business value and therefore doesn’t need the same level of protection. This tiered protection allows customers to match protection type with data value.

If you’re in a Windows environment and know that backups won’t meet your RTO and RPO objectives and you also know that you don’t need a zero-data loss solution, RepliStor provides you a great solution. It’s an affordable host-based replication solution for disaster recovery, branch office data consolidation and data distribution, providing protection between backups with just minutes of data loss and the ability to recover within minutes or hours. It’s also a proven, reliable solution, having been in the market for 12 years and with more than 20,000 customers. Let’s review some of RepliStor’s key features and functionality: RepliStor provides asynchronous, multi-threaded real-time replication. Replicating files, directories, and the registry over LAN or WAN means that you can protect your critical data by creating replica’s instantly with no distance limitations to where you want that replicated data to reside! Automated failover during server outage (provides manual option also) means that if you experience a server outage, RepliStor will automatically begin the recovery process for you without human intervention— speeding your recovery time in those instances. RepliStor leads the way with the superior server alias fail-over capabilities providing greater reliability. RepliStor replicates changed data from the source to the target, including open and closed files. Furthermore, RepliStor doesn’t have to replicate a complete file when changes are made to it. It can replicate at the sub-file level. RepliStor is also integrated out-of-the-box with Microsoft’s Volume Shadow Copy Service technology. VSS creates application consistent point-in-time snapshots allowing RepliStor to ensure recovery of Exchange 2003 & 2007, SQL Server 2005, and Windows file system data in case the real-time replica is damaged by a virus for example. RepliStor is very easy to use with a centralized management GUI for managing the entire RepliStor environment, configuration wizards for VSS, installation wizards for new installs upgrades and uninstalls as well as a utility grabber wizard for automatically collecting system information for problem resolution. Scheduling options allow customers to replicate changes in real-time or on a schedule; throttle replication to control bandwidth usage or pause updates. With user roles and rights, multiple users can be given account access to RepliStor with varying degrees of privileges. It supports 32 and 64-bit systems to meet the needs of your diverse Windows infrastructure. It works with heterogeneous storage hardware allowing for flexibility to work with direct attached storage as well as any storage array (NAS or SAN) in your environment including EMC and non-EMC storage. 39 Multi-Protocol Storage—Critical for VMware
VMware Infrastructure Data Center Shared Templates ESX Cluster–“VDI” Desktop VMs NAS/iSCSI ESX Cluster–“Big I/O” SharePoint, DW, DSS Fibre Channel SAN ESX Cluster–“Simple” AD, App Servers, Exchange 2007 As users traverse the various phases of VMware deployment, varying demands and requirements are placed on the storage environment. A user may start by implementing the simplest possible storage infrastructure, leveraging a connectivity model that is comfortable, such as iSCSI. This may meet the initial requirements for the Pilot and Light-Use phases, but as the workload requirements change with more applications being consolidated, the storage solution selected in the early phase needs to expand to meet these new requirements. <CLICK> As more VMs are rolled out, there is a need for shared templates and storage to standardize the process. NAS protocols like CIFS (Windows) or NFS (UNIX/Linux) are ideal for this. Most Windows applications also benefit from file shares. For virtual desktops and clustered VMs, IP storage (NAS and iSCSI) becomes the primary connectivity choice. As Tier 1 applications with big I/O and throughput requirements are deployed, Fibre Channel protocol may be required. EMC’s multi-protocol platforms are ideal through the life of the virtual infrastructure roll-out. By providing purpose-built, as well as cost-effective unified storage solutions, EMC meets the infrastructure needs— whether it’s an iSCSI, NAS, or Fibre Channel protocol choice. EMC Celerra Family Technical Review December 2008 Architecture and Packaging X-Blade Enclosure DART operating system Single blade Online upgrade to dual Dual blades Primary/standby with automatic failover Primary/primary with quick reboots IP connectivity (per blade): Four 10/100/1000 Copper ports Control Station n + 1 power Disk Processor Enclosure FLARE operating environment Dual active Storage Processors Automatic failover 12 SAS and/or SATA drives Fibre Channel option—four Fibre Channel ports Ž Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. The basic design principle for the integrated Celerra NX4 is to use CLARiiON CX3 hardware for the X- Blade front end and CLARiiON AX4 hardware for the storage-processor back end. The control flow is handled by the Control Station. The X-Blade Enclosure contains the X-Blade 4. To clients on the network, a Celerra looks like any other file server or iSCSI target. The X-Blades feature EMC’s Data Access in Real Time (DART) embedded system software, which is optimized for file I/O. The Celerra NX4 is available with one or two X-Blades, and can be upgraded from single to dual while online. Each X-Blade contains four 10/100/1000 Ethernet (Copper) ports. The Control Station is used to configure, manage, and upgrade the X-Blades, as well as to manage X-Blade failover. The Celerra NX4 is typically configured as primary/standby—that is, with one X-Blade designated to act as standby. It waits, fully booted, for the primary X-Blade to fail. During this wait, there is no performance degradation on failover. In the event that the primarily X-Blade fails, the standby X-Blade will take the load from the primary, then present itself to the network as the failed X-Blade. In the other option, called primary/primary, both X-Blades are active. Should a X-Blade fail, it will quickly reboot and present itself back to the network. Note to Presenter: Primary/primary is not recommended for critical data. During the reboot, the data will be inaccessible. If the X-Blade fails due to a hardware problem, the data will be inaccessible until it is replaced. The Disk Processor Enclosure (DPE) uses dual active Storage Processors for disk I/O. These processors run the FLARE microcode, a proven, robust RAID implementation. The Disk Processor Enclosure supports automatic failover should one of the Storage Processors fail. The DPE also houses up to 12 disk drives in the Celerra NX4 (SAS and ATA). On the Celerra NX4, SAS and SATA drives can be mixed in the same shelf. The Fibre Channel option allows the DPE to be shared with Fibre Channel hosts directly via the four additional Fibre Channel ports or with a standard Fibre Channel switch. Note to Presenter: The Celerra NX4 can be upgraded to the Fibre Channel option. The Fibre Channel option is a chargeable item. SAN Œ Upgradeable to Fibre Channel option
