1 WELCOME HERE! The perfect copy
There is no forbidden field in science, but we must keep the technology under control.

2 Science is developing so fast
that it is beyond our imagination. [i’mædʒi’neiʃən] 超乎我们的想象.

3 Four hundred years ago Chinese people had created the cloned images in Journey to the West, but now it has become reality in life.

4 clone (克隆) cell [sel] 细胞

5 Cloned Animals!

6 What do you know about cloning?

7 clone Scientific terms
“Cloning” is a new technology which produces an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its own cells.

8 If clone goes wrong, … A bird or a dog?

9 A lion or a kangaroo?

10 A cock or a dog?

11 A man or a dog? So what’s your attitudes towards cloning,
agree or disagree?

12 listening Listen to the tape and find out the main idea.
The reading passage is about how cloning is being ________ and the different ______ towards it. researched attitudes

13 died in____ at a much ______ age because of .
Dolly the world’s cloned . first mammal created by scientists in Scottish 1996 2003 died in____ at a much ______ age because of younger lung disease

14 Fast-reading—Main idea
Read the reading passage quickly and find out the main idea of each paragraph. (The reading passage is made up of a newspaper article about cloning and two readers’ letter. 0ne is against cloning, while the other is _________ it) . for

15 Match each paragraph with its correct main idea
The first cloned mammal was Dolly. Ian Wilmut is shocked that some scientists are considering cloning human beings. An announcement about the first cloned human embryo caused much debate. Chinese scientists continue to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind. A woman wants to have a cloned baby. Cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, but some scientists still want to clone human beings.

16 Ddecide whether the following are true or false.
1. People all over the world are happy about the idea of cloning human beings Dolly, the first cloned mammal, is exactly the same as other sheep According to the article, the scientist who created Dolly does not agree with cloning human beings. F F T

17 4. Cloning can be used to cure diseases because it can produce new tissues and organs.
5. Colin Jake is against cloning humans, just like Pauline Carter. 6. Cloning human beings is illegal in many countries, so no scientists want to clone human beings. T F F

19 Careful-reading valuable tissues and organs can be
What are the different attitudes towards the success of cloning a human embryo? On the one hand: On the other hand: Some people consider that: valuable tissues and organs can be produced and be used to save human lives human beings may be on the way to producing a real-life monster cloning human embryos with the intention of destroying them shows no respect for human life

20 Find the reasons why people are pro- or anti-cloning
in the article and letters and write them in the table below Pro-cloning Anti-cloning 1. produce valuable tissues and organs that could be used to save human lives 1. may produce a real-life Frankenshtein’s monster 2. 3. 4. 5. create more disease in the animal world cure disease like cancer help those who are unable to have children cloning shows no respect for human life Human life would just become a crop to be harvested or a prodct for sale help those who want to clone their dead children we should be having fewer babies in order to reduce Earth’s population, not cloning more

21 Comprehension The passage is mainly about_______. A. what cloning is
B. the advantage of cloning C. arguments about cloning human embryos D. the disadvantage of cloning 2.We can learn from the two letters_______. A. both of the writers are pro-cloning. B. both of the writers are anti-cloning. C. neither of the writers are against cloning. D. both of the writers are not for cloning human embryos

22 Comprehension 3.The announcement of successful human embryo
cloning has caused much debate because______. A. people still have no clear idea about the results of human cloning B. valuable tissues and organs can be used to save humans C. mankind is going to produce terrible monsters D. people know that nature will punish mankind for human cloning

23 Comprehension 4.The success of the cloned sheep Dolly has proved that_________. cloning will create more diseases in animal world B. cloned animals will die at a muchyounger age than normal C. man has been able to produce an exact copy from an adult cell D. man can interfere with nature at his will

24 Comprehension 5. According to the passage, what is the real
intention of Ian Wilmut’s cloning research? A. To create copies of humans in the end. B. To destroy human embryos in the end. C. To create new tissues or organs for sale. D. To cure deadly diseases eventually. 6. How does a woman who cannot give a birth benefit from cloning? She can have a baby using another woman’s egg. B. She can have a baby genetically related to her. C. She can adopt someone else’s child by cloning. D. She can have more children.

25 Comprehension 7. What can we infer from the whole passage?
Cloning animals is illegal in Italy. B. Chinese scientists are trying to benefit mankind by using cloning technology. C. Chinese scientists want to be the first to clone a human baby. D. Colin Jake agrees with the scientists who want to clone a human baby.

26 value likely scientific create/ cause intends curing Unable anxious
Attitudes towards the first cloned human embryo Pro-cloning It can produce tissues and organs that are of great(1)__________. Anti-cloning We are (2) ________ to produce a real-life Frankenstein’s monster. Attitudes towards the birth of Dolly the sheep Cloning is a wonderful (3) __________ breakthrough. Cloning would (4) ____________ more disease in the animal world. Representatives Ian Wilmut He never (5) ______ to create copies of humans. Instead, he thinks research efforts should concentrate on (6) ______ diseases. Faye Wilson (7) _______ to have a baby, she is (8) __________ to have a child that is genetically related to her. Severino Antinori He wants to be the first to clone a human being. Chinese scientists They have focused their efforts on cloning animals and stem cells.China has achieved great (9) _______ in producing clones of cows and goats, and continues to research ways cloning can be (10) ________ to mankind. value likely scientific create/ cause intends curing Unable anxious success beneficial

27 What uses does cloning have?
Disccusion What uses does cloning have?

28

29 Other uses?

30 Is it a good idea to clone humans some day?

31 Is it a good idea to clone humans some day?
for against Your reasons

32 Homework: Write a letter to the editor and express your opinions about
cloning human embryos. Homework:

33 Some people believe cloning technology can be used to cure the patients with genetic diseases and save a lot of people’s lives. However, other people insist that cloning technology will cause ethical problem and violate human rights. No one can predict how negative the consequences could be. We have to take a cautious approach. I don’t think it’s a good idea to clone humans even though we might have the ability to do so in the future. There are different reasons if you approach the issue from different angles. From the ethical point of view, I believe the disadvantages of producing cloned animals outweigh the advantages. If not handled properly, great confusion could arise. People could end up marrying their close relatives by mistake,if childless couples are allowed to clone themselves or adopt clones.Furthermore, if the technology is misused or stolen by evil people, great damage will be done. What if they cloned lots of criminals or murders? The world would be turned upside down.
