2. Who is W.E.B. Du Bois?
W.E.B. Du Bois was an American civil rights activist, leader, Pan-Africans, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar.
He became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in the subject of history from Harvard
Founded the short-lived Niagara Movement, intended to be an organization advocating civil rights for blacks.
Co-founder of the NAACP. Founded in 1909.

Born February 23, Great Barrington, Massachusetts
– Enters Harvard as a junior and receives B.A
1896 – Receives Ph.D. from Harvard (First African American to receive a doctoral degree in History)
– Founder and Editor of The Crisis, monthly magazine of the NAACP.
1934 – At Atlanta University as Head, Department of Sociology

1951 – Extensive speaking, writing, and spokesman for the African American society; wins Lenin Peace Prize

5. How Du Bois affected African Americans?
For many young African Americans in the period from through the 1930s, Du Bois was the voice of the black community. He pushed Americans to think and act differently towards the African Americans. All of his efforts were geared toward gaining equal treatment for black people in a world dominated by whites.

6. How did Du Bois manage to get into Harvard with all of the segregation going on?
He was able to get into Harvard because of his academic, social success, and excellent preparation.

7. How did du bois react when people were told they had to accept white supremacy?
He did not believe blacks had to accept white supremacy and came to the conclusion that the only effective strategy against racism was agitation because everyone was equal in his eye, no matter the color of their skin.

8. Why was Du Bois the voice of the black community for young African Americans?
Many young African Americans looked at Du Bois as the voice of the black community because he worked toward marshaling and presenting evidence to refute the myths of racial inferiority.

Du bois taught sociology at Atlanta University because he helped social science could help to eliminate segregation

Du Bois attacked Woodrow Wilson when the president allowed his cabinet members to segregate the federal government.

11. Black Reconstruction (1935)
Du Bois addressed this at the time that the Reconstruction Era following the U.S. Civil War. He argued that the era marked a crucial turning point for the possible extension of democracy in America and one that highlighted the agency and actions of African Americans.
