The preterit tense (el pretérito) is one of several past tenses in Spanish and it is used to describe actions completed at one point in the past or that lasted a specific amount of time in the past and are now completed.

Regresé anoche a la medianoche. (I returned last night at midnight.)

3. When is past tense used?
The past tense is used when you need to distinguish actions that were done in the past and stuff that happened in the past. Past tense in spanish is used when you want to talk about and describe actions that occurred in the past. h
Ex: (in english) I called at 1:00.
(in spanish) Llame a la una.
