4 Location Information Location: Buffalo, NY
Latitude: 42.92oN (25o in Dubai) Longitude: 78.72oW Winter Design Weather Data: Outside Design Temperature: -16.5oC Wind Speed: 16.5m/s Summer Design Weather Data: Max Dry Bulb Temperature: 30.1oC Coincident Wet-Bulb Temperature: 21.5oC Min Dry-Bulb Temperature: 20.6oC

5 Materials: External Walls: (outside to inside) Ground Floor:
Brickwork (Inner Leaf) – 10cm Oak (Radial) – 3cm XPS Extruded Polystyrene – 7cm Glass Wool – 7cm Wood Blocks– 10cm Wood Blocks – 10cm Cast Concrete – 10cm Glass Wool – 5cm External Windows: Gypsum Plaster – 1.3cm Double Paned – 10% glazed Roof: Sunroom Window: Asphalt Tiles – 2.5cm Quadruple Paned – 20% glazed Air Gap – 1cm Roofing Felt – 0.5cm External Door: Glass Wool – 8cm Steel – 4cm Internal Partitions: Internal Door: Gypsum Plaster – 5cm Pine – 3.5cm Air Gap – 10cm

6 Heating/Cooling Systems
Split Central A/C Unit The outdoor cabinet (shown below) contains the condenser and compressor. An indoor cabinet contains the evaporator. The indoor cabinet also contains a furnace. Heating: Fuel: Natural Gas Heating System COP: 0.8 Cooling: Fuel: Electricity from grid Cooling System COP: 1.6

7 Heating and Cooling Loads
Overall, I took data for 6 different scenarios 4 House Orientations (Sunroom facing North, South, East, and West) Looking for best and worst case scenarios 2 House Relocations (Hot and Frigid Climates) Compare Buffalo, NY to extremely hot and extremely cold climates

8 Heating and Cooling Loads
Orientation 1: West Family Room: 4.03kW (16%) Den + Game Room: 3.67kW (15%) Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%) Cooling Results: Design Capacity: 10.11kW Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: Sunroom: 3.47kW (34%) Heating Results: Kitchen: 1.88kW (19%) Design Capacity: 24.87kW Family Room: 1.34kW (13%) Top 3 Room Heating Requirements:

9 Orientation 1 Temperature and Heat Gain

10 Heating/Cooling Loads (Continued)
Orientation 2: North Sunroom: 2.18kW (9%) – Same energy req. when large sunroom window faces N or S. Cooling Results: Design Capacity: 7.84kW Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: Kitchen: 1.56kW (20%) Sunroom: 1.34kW (17%) Heating Results: Family Room: 1.14kW (15%) Design Capacity: 24.82kW Lower than other orientations since large sunroom window faces north. This means that the window sees no sun, and does not absorb any heat. Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: Family Room: 4.03kW (16%) Den + Game Room: 3.66kW (15%) Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%)

11 Heating/Cooling Loads (Continued)
Orientation 3: 180 degrees (East) Family Room: 4.04kW (16%) Den and Game Room: 3.67kW (15%) Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%) Cooling Results: Design Capacity: 9.29kW Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: Sunroom: 2.95kW (32%) Kitchen: 1.49kW (16%) Heating Results: Den and Game Room: 1.17kW (13%) Design Capacity: 24.87kW Top 3 Room Heating Requirements:

12 Heating/Cooling Loads (Continued)
Orientation 4: South Sunroom: 2.18kW (9%) – Do not save any energy with this large south facing window when compared to orientation 2 (90 degrees). Cooling Results: Design Capacity: 10.52kW 3kW higher that north orient Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: Heating Results: Design Capacity: 24.83kW Sunroom: 3.04kW (29%) – faces sun at all times – over 200% higher than when sunroom faces north Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: Family Room: 4.00kW (16%) Kitchen: 1.71kW (16%) Den and Game Room: 3.67kW (15%) Master Bedroom: 1.69kW (16%) Kitchen: 3.12kW (13%)

13 Results Best Case: Worst Case: Heating: Cooling:
Very little fluctuation when rotating house. Maximum heating load change of 0.04kW. Cooling: Minimum cooling load when sunroom faces north (receives no sunlight). Maximum cooling load when sunroom faces south (constantly faces sun). Overall, the best case scenario of my house would be with the sunroom facing north (but then it wouldn’t be much of a sunroom!). Overall, the worst case scenario of my house would be with the sunroom facing south. Heating Load: 24.83kW Heating Load: 24.82kW Cooling Load: 10.52kW Cooling Load: 7.84kW

14 Relocation 1 Dubai, UAE Latitude: 25.25oN Longitude: 55.33oE

15 Relocation 1 Heating Results: Cooling Results:
Design Capacity: 5.22kW (475% reduction from Buffalo, NY) Design Capacity: 24.38kW (240% increase from same orientation in Buffalo, NY) Heating load likely due to temperature drop at night Top 3 Room Cooling Requirements: Top 3 Room Heating Requirements: Master Bedroom: 3.8kW (16%) Family Room: 1.11kW (21%) Kitchen: 3.37kW (14%) Den + Game Room: 0.84kW (19%) Sunroom: 2.83kW (12%) – faces sun at all times Kitchen: 0.54kW (10%)
