2 What is a COGNATE? nouns: profesor/ professor diccionario/dictionary
Examples: words that are cognates words that are NOT in Spanish and English cognates nouns: profesor/ professor diccionario/dictionary familia/family adjectives: atlético/athletic curioso/curious verbs: adorar/ to adore admirar/ to admire perro/ dog hermano/ brother amigo/ friend bonita/pretty atrevido/ mischievous hablar/ to speak ir/ to go

3 Definition: Cognate n. a word related to a word in another language
[Latin co (same) + gnatus (born)] Examples of Cognates between Spanish and French: ami/ amigo (friend) sympathique/ simpático (nice) chanter/cantar (to sing)

4 English comes from the Germanic language family. Spanish comes from the Romance language family.

5 So WHY are there so many cognates between Spanish and English?

The Romans, speaking Latin, defeated Hannibal and conquered what is now modern Spain. Latin mixed with the language of Hispania and became known as Spanish. Julius Caesar led and army north into Gaul (modern France) and instituted Latin as the major language. Latin mixed with Gaulish and later became known as French. In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy, invaded and conquered England. With him, he brought the French language. English adopted many French words. These French words came from Latin and therefore share the same roots as Spanish. 8

n. words that look like words in another language, but do not have the same meaning. n. words that sound the same as words in another language, but do not have the same meaning

13 Lucky for us… much less common! There are thousands
of cognates between Spanish and English and amigos falsos are much less common!
