5. How do I become a GP?
As an Australian graduate your pathway for general practice is the AGPT which is delivered by 17 RTPs throughout Australia.
In Victoria there are 4 RTPs.
Unlike other specialities, in General Practice the GP colleges do not deliver the training. The training is managed nationally by General Practice Education and Training (GPET) and the training is delivered by 17 RTPs.

There are two GP colleges operating in Australia. The choice is up to each doctor. Contact the colleges or visit their websites to gain an understanding of their curriculum and program. You do not have to select a college until you have commenced in the AGPT program.

11. The GP Training Program Required Hospital Rotations
Prior to commencing GP Terms, doctors must have completed *
General Medicine
General Surgery
Emergency
Paediatrics (or equivalent)
3 optional rotations relevant to General Practice
Recognition of Prior Learning may apply
* Rotations must be weeks duration
Any questions regarding rotations should be directed to RTP staff before undertaking the rotation.

12. The GP Training Program Training Pathways
General Pathway
There is flexibility and options available as to how GP Terms are undertaken.
Elect one of the following options
12 months training
In outer metropolitan location or
In rural location (RA 2-5) or
In non-capital city classified as RA1
More flexibility exists in the General Pathway, there are lots of options to fulfill the return of service obligation.
2 x 6 months training
6mths training outer Metropolitan
6 mths training rural location (RA 2-5)
6 mths training non-capital city (RA1)
6 mths training Indigenous health in AMS

16. Financial Incentives
A range of generous financial incentives exist for both rural pathway and general pathway registrars including GPRIP and Outer Metropolitan Registrar Program
A HELP/HECS reimbursement scheme also operates for rural registrars.
Each RTP have their own support packages – contact your local RTP for more information
Each RTP will have different policies about these options. Applicants are encouraged to contact the RTP before applying.

17. What about the pay?
GPT1 and GPT2 have standard contracts based on 2012 National Minimum Terms and Conditions (Refer to GPRA)
GPT 3 and GPT4 – negotiable with your practice
GPs – varies enormously however the more you work the more you can earn
It is not possible to give exact salary ranges for GPs. There are too many variables. However, GPRA has an “online earnings calculator” on their website which you can refer doctors to if they want more information.

18. The 2013 AGPT Application and Selection Process
Application and eligibility check
Applicants submit an online application, supporting documentation, referee details and four preferences for the RTPs they would like to train with. GPET confirms each applicants eligibility.
National assessment
Eligible applicants attend a National Assessmnet Centre between 16 June and 1 July 2012, where they will undertake a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and Multiple Mini Inrterviews (MMIs). Both assessments determine each applicants score. Applicants will be informed of their score and given the option to modify their RTP preferences.
Depending on an applicant’s score and RTP preferences it is established if the applicant can be shortlisted with an RTP.
Applications are earlier than previous years – one month early. New national assessment and selection process.
Regional training provider selection and placement offers
The matched RTP examines the application. They may ask for additional information, or an interview.

20. Selection Process - 1 National Assessment Centres 16 June – 1 July
Melbourne dates to be advised
Applicants will sit a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and participate in Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI).
Completion of this stage does not guarantee a training place
The final stage of selection may require an interview
Applicants can choose an Assessment Centre anywhere in Australia. Applicants choose a centre when they submit their application. Each centre will have a maximum capacity, once that is filled, latecomers may have to book a centre in another state to the state of origin, so need to get in early with booking.

21. Selection Process - 2 Situational Judgement Test (SJT)
An SJT is a written test of 50 questions. Applicants have two hours to complete the test.
There are 2 types of questions, requiring the applicant to either

22. Selection Process - 3 Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)
An MMI is a series of 10-minute interview stations, with at least one interview station for each required assessment criteria.
Each applicant has two minutes to read the question and has 8 minutes to answer to the interviewer.
MMI’s are used to examine
Communication/interpersonal skills
Organisation/management skills
Personal attributes
An applicants sense of vocation/motivation for general practice.

23. Still undecided about GP?
Consider doing a GP placement as a HMO – “try before you buy”
The Prevocational General Practice Placement Program (PGPPP) is available throughout rural, regional, urban and outer-metropolitan locations. Over 40 posts in Victoria.

If undecided about GP, then consider a PGPPP post. Full Victorian post listing in brochure in seminar pack.
