1 Unit 2 Second steps by Tammi Walker
Lesson 8 Subject: Social Skills/Social Studies Topic: Similarities and Differences Core Content: SS-EP (we are all alike in some ways and different in some ways)

2 Lesson Concepts People can have different feelings about the same situation It is okay for people to have different feelings about the same thing

3 WILt: When I learn this…
I can compare physical and emotional similarities and differences between two children. I can demonstrate that people can have different feelings about the same situation. You might ask, why this lesson matters? Well, in early childhood, children begin to recognize that people can feel and think different things about the same situation. This skill is an important part of social perspective taking. Not assuming everyone feels just as they do or as they would in a situation helps children build empathy.

4 First Let’s warm up with simon says
There are 2 rules Do the same thing as I do Rule 1- When Simon says do the same thing as I do, do the same thing. Rule 2- When Simon says to do something different than I do, do something different. Do something different When doing something different it does not matter what you do as long as it is different. We will practice the game slowly since this is for 1st graders. Add in feelings once students catch on to the rules.

5 Simon says… Show the same feeling on your face as mine.
Show a different feeling on your face than mine. Play this game several rounds.

16 Louisha? Questions What things are the same about Sally and Louisha?
What things are different?

17 Some things about Sally and Louisha are the same, and some are different.
Sometimes people have the same feelings, and sometimes they have different feelings.

18 Think about the clues How does Louisha feel? What clues help you know how Louisha feels? How does Sally feel? What clues tell you how Sally feels?

19 Thumbs up if it’s okay for the girls to feel different feelings about the same situation. Everyone can have his or her own way of feeling about something. Think Did the other children in the video feel the same way as Sally or Louisha?

20 I’m so happy! I’m confused Sum it up Sometimes people have the same feelings as you do. But sometimes they have different feelings about the same thing.

21 Show how you would react to each scenario
holding a frog holding a pet iguana singing at a school assembly swimming in deep water staying inside for recess

22 Wrap up From each scenario you should see that sometimes people can have the same or different feelings about the same situation. Wiggle your finger if it is okay for people to have different feelings about the same thing.
