1 How to answer Credit ‘Selective in the use of facts’ Questions

2 These Credit questions are worth 8 marks.
This means you will have to work hard to get these marks. There will usually be 4 things you have to do worth 2 marks each giving 8 marks overall.

3 You must have a clear, structured which uses relevant and appropriate source material to answer this question well.

4 What is selective in the use of facts?
This is when a person does not look at all the facts [information] about an issue. The person only selects [picks] the facts that support what they think about an issue. They are exaggerating, lying or wrong about an issue.

5 Selective in the use of facts about Braeview Academy
Someone who thinks that Braeview Academy is a bad school will only look at the problems in the school e.g. exclusions, litter, vandalism etc. The person will not mention the pupils who get good results or who put on a very good school show etc.

6 Every, all, most, large, many, few
Words to look out for. Every, all, most, large, many, few These are the words to look out for. You may find that it is not every, all, most, many or few that did something. You might find that it was a different amount that did something. Few or many? or

7 What is the question? In a Credit ‘Selective in the use of Facts’ question you may be asked something like …… Explain, in detail, the extent to which Mr Smith could be accused of being selective in the use of facts. How should you tackle this question?

8 First of all …….. Do not be fooled by the question.
You are not just trying to prove the person wrong. They may be correct in some parts and wrong in some parts.

9 How you should tackle this question.
Make sure your answer is ‘in detail’. Work on the ‘Selective in the use of facts’ [correct or wrong] part first even though it is at the end of the question. ‘Prove what you say’ with information and statistics from the sources. Leave the ‘extent to which’ part to the end even though it is at the start of the question.

10 Make sure your answer is ‘in detail’.

11 In detail Each part will be worth 2 marks.
You must give at least 2 different reasons with written information, statistics, information from a table, graph, map. This is ‘in detail’. Write each as a separate paragraph so the marker can easily mark what you have done.  3 x 2 = 6 marks [not 8 marks yet!!]

12 Work on the ‘Selective in the use of facts’ [correct or wrong] part first even though it is at the end of the question.

13 Credit 2004 USA 3(A) (b) . adapted
‘Location, education and race have little effect on health in the USA.’ View of Hilary Wallace Explain, in detail, the extent to which Hilary Wallace could be accused of being selective in the use of facts. 8 marks p.s. the questions have changed a bit over time so watch out but this question is a good start.

14 ‘Location, education and race have little effect on health in the USA
What is Hilary actually saying? Hilary is actually saying is 3 different things. 1] Location has little effect on health in the USA. 2] Education has little effect on health in the USA 3] Race has little effect on health in the USA. Take each one in turn and give evidence to prove if she is CORRECT or WRONG for each one.

15 Hilary Wallace says Location has little effect on health in the USA.
– so look at the map only. The darker the key of the map the more deaths there are. Which area has the darkest parts? Which area has the lightest parts? Now do you agree with Hilary? Yes or No Why? The South The West No The part of the USA you are in affects the death rate a lot not a little. That is the thinking done now write up your answer in detail.

16 Hillary Wallace says’ location has little effect on health in the USA’.
From the map I can see that The South has the worst death rates where most of the states are over 1000 or more e.g. Mississippi. From the map I can also see that The West has the best death rates where most of the states are under 800 – 899 and some are 799 or less of a death rate e.g. California. This proves that location does affect health a lot and Hilary Wallace is wrong.

17 Hilary Wallace says Education has little effect on health in the USA.
– so look at the writing only. Where is education and health mentioned? Now do you agree with Hilary? Yes or No Why? That is the thinking done now write up your own answer in detail.

18 Hilary Wallace says race has little effect on health in the USA.
Race – so look at the graph only. The higher the column the worse the death rate. Who has the worst Heart Disease Death Rate? Who has the best Heart Disease Death Rate? Look at Cancer rates and Stroke rates. Decide who is worst and best. You might use one of these as well, remember ‘in detail’. Now do you agree with Hilary? Yes or No Why? That is the thinking done now write up your own answer in detail.

19 Leave the ‘extent to which’ part to the end even though it is at the start of the question.

Then you decided if she is CORRECT or WRONG for each one. This means that she can have ………. 1] All 3 Correct 2] All 3 Wrong 3] A mixture of Correct and Wrong in the 3

Location has little effect on health in the USA. Education has little effect on health in the USA Race has little effect on health in the USA

32 So back to Hilary …… Hillary’s statements Correct or Wrong
Location has little effect on health in the USA. Wrong Education has little effect on health in the USA Race has little effect on health in the USA

33 So back to Hilary …… Hillary’s statements Correct or Wrong Location has little effect on health in the USA. Wrong Education has little effect on health in the USA Race has little effect on health in the USA Hillary Wallace has all 3 statements on location, education and race wrong. This means that she could be accused of being totally selective.

34 How many Marks That final paragraph now means you have also explained the ‘extent to which’ which is also worth 2 marks, therefore you now have …. Location marks Education - 2 marks Race marks ‘Extent to which’ - 2 marks so you now have 8 out of 8, WELL DONE.

35 The Full Answer 1 Hillary Wallace says location has little effect on health in the USA. From the map I can see that The South has the worst death rates where most of the states are over 1000 or more e.g. Mississippi. I can also see that The West has the best death rates where most of the states are under 800 – 899 and some are 799 or less of a death rate e.g. California. This shows that location does affect health and Hilary Wallace is wrong. [2 marks] Hillary Wallace says education has little effect on health in the USA. From the written information I can see that men under 12 years education have a death rate of 764 but if the have more than 13 years of education the death rate drops to It is similar for women. This shows that education does affect health and Hilary Wallace is again wrong. [2 marks]

36 The Full Answer 2 Hillary Wallace says race has little effect on health in the USA. From the graph I can see that death rates are different for different races. In all the diseases shown Blacks have the highest death rates. In Heart disease the Black death rate is 325, White 252, Hispanic 160 and Asian, the best, at 145. [2 marks] This shows that race does affect health and Hilary Wallace is wrong. Hillary Wallace is wrong in all 3 of her views on location, education and race effects on health. She can be accused of being selective in the use of facts to a very large extent. [2 marks] Well done the question needs a lot of work but with practice and revision you can get 8 out of 8.
