1 Mass is the amount of matter (“stuff”) in an object.
What is mass? Mass is the amount of matter (“stuff”) in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram (g).

2 Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.
What is volume? Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system is the liter (L or l).

3 Measuring Volume We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects.

4 What is the meniscus? The curve at the surface of a liquid is called a meniscus. The meniscus of most liquids curves up at the sides, making the center appear lower. This happens because the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.

5 Read from the bottom of the curve!
Reading the meniscus Read from the bottom of the curve! ALWAYS READ AT EYE LEVEL

6 What is this measurement?

7 What is the volume of water in each cylinder?

8 Formula for the volume of a regular object:
Measuring Solid Volume 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm The volume of a solid object is expressed in cubic centimeters (cm3) and cubic meters (m3): Formula for the volume of a regular object: Volume = length x width x height 10 cm 8 cm 9 cm 720 cm3 _____ X _____ X _____ = _____

9 Measuring Solid Volume
We can measure the volume of irregular objects using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______ 280 mL 200 mL 80 cm3
