1 Photosynthesis

2 Engage: Warm Up Graph the following information to the best of your ability. Remember… where does the dependent variable go? Where does the independent go? A student is observing how tall a plant will grow in different amounts of light. This is what they found after letting the plants grow for 3 weeks: Plant in the window: 10 inches Plant sitting near lamp: 8 inches Plant sitting inside of a drawer: 3 inches

3 CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Carbohydrates + O2 Photosynthesis
“photo” = light “synthesis” = to put together CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Gives you Carbohydrates + O2

4 CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Carbohydrates + O2 Photosynthesis Carbon dioxide
Gives you Carbon dioxide Water Carbohydrates + O2 Sugar (glucose) Oxygen

5 CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Carbohydrates + O2 Photosynthesis
Gives you 1. REACTANTS (what you start with) Carbohydrates + O2 2. PRODUCTS (what you end with)

6 3. Which cellular process take in energy from the sun to make glucose?
Photosynthesis!

7 Glucose is sugar! Glucose is food for the plant.
4. What is glucose? Glucose is sugar! Glucose is food for the plant. (Remember ose=sugar)

8 5. Where does it happen in the cell??
Chloroplasts Cell Wall Cell Wall Chloroplastas Nucleus Nucleus

9 What does a chloroplast look like?
6. What does a chloroplast look like? Draw in your notes… a circle with something that looks like stacked on the inside.

10 7. What 2 structures are in plant cells only?
Chloroplast & Cell wall

11 8. What gas is TAKEN IN during photosynthesis?

12 8. What gas is TAKEN IN during photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Carbon Dioxide enters the plant through stomata (tiny holes) in the leaves.

13 9. What gas is RELEASED during photosynthesis?

14 9. What gas is RELEASED during photosynthesis?
Oxygen (O2) Oxygen leaves the plant and humans and animals breathe it in!

15 10. Draw out what photosynthesis looks like …. What goes in
10. Draw out what photosynthesis looks like …. What goes in? What comes out? Walk around to check on the student’s ability to follow the notes to fill in their own picture.

16 CO2 + H2O + + O2 11. Does photosynthesis release or absorb energy?
Light Energy! CO2 + H2O + Carbohydrates (glucose) + O2

17 Photosynthesis absorbs energy from the sun. + O2
11. Does photosynthesis release or absorb energy? Light Energy! CO2 + H2O + Photosynthesis absorbs energy from the sun. Carbohydrates (glucose) + O2

18 CO2 + H2O + Sun Light CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Carbohydrates + O2
12. What 3 Factors affect the rate of photosynthesis? “photo” = light “synthesis” = to put together CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Gives you CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Carbohydrates + O2

19 13. Where does carbon dioxide (CO 2) come from?
Humans (and other organisms) breathe in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Before question goes up allow students to talk about this picture… What is this picture showing? Is this CO2 helping or hurting the plant? It is helping as plants use CO2 to do photosynthesis. CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2

20 14. What is the difference between a heterotroph and autotroph?
Heterotrophy are consumers who survive off of plants. Autotrophs are plants that make their own energy.

21 15. What organisms release carbon dioxide?
(Heterotrophs) Humans… Dogs… Cats… Fish… Insects… And the list goes on…

22 16. What organisms release oxygen?
“Autotrophs” (Plants!!) Flowers… Grass… Trees… Shrubs… And the list goes on…

23 CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Carbohydrates + O2 Photosynthesis Cheer!
Gives you Carbohydrates + O2

24 Marine Environment Connection Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
Do you know what SUBMERGED AQUATIC VEGETATION is? Try common sense… Video on Baltimore Citizens and the Chesapeake Bay. NOW YOU KNOW!

25 Marine Environment Connection Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
Video on the importance of Bay grasses. Why are Bay grasses important? SAV PLANTS

26 Marine Environment Connection Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
Video on secchi disc and water clarity. How is the secchi disc used? Why is water clarity important to the process of photosynthesis? SECCHI DISC

27 Station 1-What is wrong with this picture?
How are the SAV plants an indicator of good health in the Bay?

28 Station 2-What is GOOD about this picture?
How is the reading on this sacchi disk? Explain how this will affect SAV plants.

29 Station 3-What is wrong with this picture?
How is the reading on this sacchi disk? Explain how this will affect SAV plants.

30 Station 4-What is happening with this picture?
Compare these two pictures. Which reading would be more advantageous for SAV plants? Why?

31 Exit Quiz

32 Exit Quiz Drill: 1) Write the formula for photosynthesis. Hint:
______ + _______ + ______  _______ + _______ 2) In the formula you wrote for #1, CIRCLE the 2 energy sources, UNDERLINE the 2 gases, and put a BOX around the liquid.
