Francis Scott Key wrote the words to THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER
He wrote them on an English ship
Francis was trying to convince the British to release his friend.
While on the ship, he watched the battle of Fort McHenry.
When the battle was over, the American flag was still flying

Francis wrote a poem called The Defense of Fort McHenry based on what he saw
In June, 1889, Francis Scott Key’s poem was set to a popular British song .
