3 National Anthem A national anthem is patriotic music that speaks about history, traditions and struggles of the people To become a national anthem the song must be recognized by the nation's government National Anthems are performed on ceremonial occasions and at some types of theatrical or sporting events Some National Anthems have no lyrics

5 Patriotism Defined as love of one's country
It is loyalty that all citizens show to their country or nation Red, White and Blue are our nation’s colors People can show their patriotism to their country by singing songs, wearing certain clothes, and waving flags

6 How did the Star-Spangled Banner become our National Anthem?

7 STAR-SPANGLED BANNER Francis Scott Key wrote the words to THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER He wrote them on an English ship Francis was trying to convince the British to release his friend. While on the ship, he watched the battle of Fort McHenry. When the battle was over, the American flag was still flying

8 STAR-SPANGLED BANNER Francis wrote a poem called The Defense of Fort McHenry based on what he saw In June, 1889, Francis Scott Key’s poem was set to a popular British song . In March 1913, “The Star Spangled Banner became the National Anthem of the United States.

Oh Say! Can you see, By the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed At the twilight’s last gleaming? And the rocket’s red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof the the night, That our flag was still there. Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming? Oh Say! Does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
